LAS VEGAS HOTEL ADR is anticipated to reach $573 during February 9-11, setting a record for any Super Bowl weekend, according to STR. The research firm also foresees an 87.9 percent occupancy rate for the market from Friday to Sunday night, translating to a RevPAR of $504. Miami set records for the highest Super Bowl ADR and RevPAR in 2020, STR said. However, a significant difference lies in size: Las Vegas, the largest U.S. market with 393 hotels and 172,707 rooms, has more than double Miami's room inventory. "The Super Bowl's unique volume of demand, driven by not only the game but the leadup festivities, as well as the attractions Las Vegas has to offer, is the perfect recipe to drive record-breaking prices," said Chris Klauda, STR's senior director of market insights. "While the F1 Vegas Grand Prix impact was the greatest on and around the Las Vegas Strip, the reach and impact of Super Bowl LVIII will spread to areas well beyond the Strip."

U.S. EXTENDED-STAY HOTEL occupancy declined across 59 MSAs in 2023 compared to 2019, primarily due to significant ADR growth over the past three years, according to The Highland Group. Additionally, extended-stay hotel RevPAR surged in more than 80 percent of MSAs, with ten of them, including four major hotel markets, experiencing gains exceeding 10 percent. Despite an 8 percent increase in the number of extended-stay hotel rooms under construction in the 100 largest MSAs over the past year, the figures remain below pre-pandemic levels, the report said. The resurgence in occupancy was notably led by smaller markets, where strong ADR increases and supply expansion played pivotal roles in driving the lowest occupancy recovery indices for MSAs in 2023.

IHG HOTELS & RESORTS reported a 23 percent increase in profit from reportable segments in 2023, surpassing the $1 billion milestone for the first time. The company also noted a 16.1 percent rise in RevPAR, a 5.1 percent increase in ADR, and a 6.4 percentage point uptick in occupancy during the previous year. It anticipates returning more than $1 billion to shareholders through dividends and share buybacks this year, IHG said in a statement. "Travel demand was strong across all markets, with RevPAR up 16 percent from last year and 11 percent ahead of the 2019 pre-pandemic peak," said Elie Maalouf, IHG Hotels & Resorts' chief executive officer. "Combined with the power of our enterprise and efficient operating model, profit from reportable segments grew by 23 percent, exceeding one billion dollars for the first time, and adjusted EPS grew by 33 percent." This marks one of the company's most significant quarters for development activity, IHG said. U.S. HOTEL PERFORMANCE improved in the second week of May compared to the previous week, with positive year-over-year comparisons, according to CoStar. Key metrics such as occupancy, RevPAR, and ADR all increased week-over-week. Occupancy rose to 66.1 percent for the week ending May 11, up from 64.4 percent the previous week, representing a 2.1 percent year-over-year increase. ADR increased to $162.14 from $159.97, a 4.4 percent rise compared to last year. RevPAR reached $107.24, up from $103.09 the prior week, showing a 6.6 percent increase compared to the same period in 2023. Among the top 25 markets, San Francisco reported the highest year-over-year increases in each of the three key performance metrics: occupancy increased by 20.6 percent to 79.3 percent, ADR rose by 54.5 percent to $313.13, and RevPAR increased by 86.3 percent to $248.28. The market's performance was boosted by the RSA Conference.

Moxy Boulder, a new hotel on University Hill in Boulder, Colorado, is now open. It is the first hotel to open in Boulder since 2018. THE U.S. HOTEL industry saw lower performance in the fourth week of July compared to the previous week, with mixed year-over-year results, according to CoStar. Key metrics such as occupancy, RevPAR, and ADR all declined from the prior week. Occupancy fell to 72 percent for the week ending July 27, down from 73.5 percent the previous week and showing a 0.4 percent year-over-year decrease. ADR stood at $164.45, compared to $165.91 the prior week, reflecting a 1.3 percent increase from last year. RevPAR was $118.37, down from $122.02 the previous week but up 0.9 percent compared to the same period in 2023. Among the top 25 markets, New Orleans saw the highest year-over-year occupancy increase, rising 16.9 percent to 66.7 percent. San Diego posted the largest ADR lift, up 12 percent to $294.80.

THE NATIONAL LABOR Relations Board recently withdrew its appeal of a Texas judge's ruling blocking its joint employer rule that would have broadened the shared responsibility for employees between franchisers and franchisees. Opponents of the rule said it would have damaged small businesses, including hotels, while President Joe Biden's administration said it would better enable employees to protect their rights. On Friday, the NLRB asked the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to dismiss its challenge, saying it believes the rule is lawful but wants "to consider options for addressing the outstanding joint employer matters before it," according to Bloomberg Law. The appeal had been related to a March 8 ruling in a lawsuit filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and other business associations challenging the rule's legality.

NEW YORK CITY Council members recently introduced a bill requiring hotels to obtain additional licenses to operate in the city. However, the American Hotel & Lodging Association called the bill "destructive," warning it would permanently alter hotel operations and threaten thousands of jobs in the city. The bill's sponsors claim it addresses several issues, including prohibiting hotels from using subcontractors for core functions, adopting minimum hygiene standards and committing to policies to prevent prostitution and human trafficking. AHLA urged the council to slow down on the proposed licenses, noting they would decimate the hospitality economy. "This abrupt and destructive bill would permanently alter how hotels operate and threaten the jobs of thousands of New Yorkers," said Kevin Carey, AHLA's interim president and CEO. "If it becomes law, thousands of hotel jobs could be lost, hotels will shutter, and New York City's economy - especially small business retailers, restaurants, and other hotel service providers - will suffer substantially."
