MISCONCEPTION: Problems are easier to solve when a group of people get together to discuss solutions.

THE TRUTH: The desire to reach consensus and avoid confrontation hinders progress.

I agree with the author and how he talks about how people are afraid to speak their mind when they are in a group and afraid of punishment.

Groupthink happens when a boss is present and everyone says things to please the one person based on not losing friends or getting fired from the boss. This results in a false consensus and no one will do anything about it.

People should always be able to speak their mind and not be afraid of punishment. Also if their not afraid of punishment, their afraid of being made fun of.

If people are able to speak their mind then they are able to make more logical decisions.

"for every plan to work, every team needs at least one asshole who doesn't give a shit if he or she gets fired or exiled or excommunicated"

I like the real life examples of how the author talks about how people end up at restaurants no one wanted to go to, even though they made the decision because they were in a big group.

Pearl Harbor, the sinking of the Titanicm and the invasion of Iraq are all situations that occurred because of groupthink.

Maintain harmony, when everyone is happy it tends to increase productivity. Work can be negative, this is why sometimes it can be very unproductive. Like having your boss hovering over you, making you nervous. Most of the time, you begin to observe other members of your work force, figuring out the consensus opinion. Thinking about the consequences of disagreeing. Everyone is doing the same thing.

As primates, we are quick to form groups and feel as if we should defend them from the ill wishes of other group

Research shows that groups of friends who allow members to disagree and still be friends are more likely to come to better decisions.

It seems like common sense, but you will rationalize consensus unless you know how to avoid it.

    Soacial Loafing

MISCONCEPTION: When you are joined by others in a task, you work harder and become more accomplished

TRUTH: Once a part of a group, you tend to put in less effort because you know your work will be pooled together with others'

When everyone joins together to work for a common goal, everyone "loafs" more than if working alone

We should talk about the Tug of War experiment.

there are many cases where people share the same opinion but nobody speaks it out loud for fear of disagreement with the rest of the group.

This is like when lifting canoes, it's easier with like 8 people because everyone has to lift, but when there are like 20 people, everyone lifts less and it feels harder.

people often give advice with opinions that are not honestly their own

Single everyone out so they work harder! When in groups people don't try as hard.

As long as you think you are part of a group you unconsciously put in less effort
