Groupthink happens when a boss is present and everyone says things to please the one person based on not losing friends or getting fired from the boss. This results in a false consensus and no one will do anything about it.
People should always be able to speak their mind and not be afraid of punishment. Also if their not afraid of punishment, their afraid of being made fun of.
If people are able to speak their mind then they are able to make more logical decisions.
I like the real life examples of how the author talks about how people end up at restaurants no one wanted to go to, even though they made the decision because they were in a big group.
Maintain harmony, when everyone is happy it tends to increase productivity. Work can be negative, this is why sometimes it can be very unproductive. Like having your boss hovering over you, making you nervous. Most of the time, you begin to observe other members of your work force, figuring out the consensus opinion. Thinking about the consequences of disagreeing. Everyone is doing the same thing.
This is like when lifting canoes, it's easier with like 8 people because everyone has to lift, but when there are like 20 people, everyone lifts less and it feels harder.
THE TRUTH: The desire to reach consensus and avoid confrontation hinders progress.
If people are able to speak their mind then they are able to make more logical decisions.
edit: Wtf
MISCONCEPTION: When you are joined by others in a task, you work harder and become more accomplished
TRUTH: Once a part of a group, you tend to put in less effort because you know your work will be pooled together with others'
no one realizes it, no one admits to it
