Education World: The More Books at Home, The Higher the Child’s Education - 0 views

The presence of books in the home has a greater influence on a childs level of education than does the parents income, nationality, or level of education. A 20-year study shows how investing in books can make a big difference. Included: Highlights of the study. I thought this was pretty interesting. How many of our students have never had a book read to them at home?

Important to bring up at conferences
  • GPA Director Lindsay Whitley said many parents want to support their children’s learning at home, but often they don’t have the resources they need to do so. To fill this need, the district is paying to make a live online tutoring service from Brainfuse available to parents at no cost.
  • The tutoring, which is available for a wide range of subject areas, occurs through a live online chat session with a subject matter expert, and the platform includes a virtual whiteboard tool in which the tutor and student can work out a problem together. “The tutors don’t give students the answers; they help students work through problems on their own,” Whitley said.

Brief Description Students analyze photographs of high plains sod homes and read accompanying narratives. They then choose one photograph and, using the copy and paste features and simple drawing tools available in Microsoft Word, students identify characteristics, points, differences, and questions they find in that photograph. -Stephanie Jones

A great resource for creating, modifying or "stealing" rubric for just about any subject. I have used this for a number of year. You can create and save rubrics to the site and share them.
