Education World: Wire Side Chat: Historical Fishwrap uses newspaper reproductions to te... - 1 views

  •
Few people think of todays newspapers as tomorrows history books. But two history teachers have compiled reproductions of newspapers front pages to help students get a snapshot of events as they were reported.
  •
This method allows the students to see history as an "in the moment" photo. Along with the headlines they can see local news, sports, editorials, and advertising. This offers a direct compare/contrast lesson on the time period being studied and current events.

Education World: Some Classroom "Dilemmas" Are Beneficial - 0 views

  •
In this week's Voice of Experience essay, Max Fischer shares his experiences using moral dilemmas to bring classroom lessons to life. Discussions of dilemmas tied to his curriculum challenge students to think critically and teach many other skills. Included: Join the discussion -- share your favorite role-play or simulation activity.
  •
The greatest moments in history are born from tough choices and difficult decisions. Using dilemma activities in teaching history or civics puts the students "in the moment" of history. The lesson can be altered to fit any age group and subject matter, and allows the class to learn appropriate tone in discussion/debate.

Who Gets to Tell [Y]Our story? @Edhistory101 - Uncovering The Truth With @JennBinis | T... - 0 views

  • Who determines the truth and gets to tell the story of us in the history books? Jenn Borgioli Binis (@JennBinis), @edhistory101 host, led a conversation at Educon which looked at the answer to this question. She specifically looked at the history of education. She challenged attendees to think about stories told from the perspectives of those who haven’t traditionally told them and had schools named after them.

Teaching the Civil War through Techology - 0 views

  •
I am going to offer a unit on the Civil War and its impact on World History in my World History class (mostly 10th graders) for the first time. They quit teaching about the Civil War in US History that students take as juniors in our district, and I think they need more than what they got in 7th grade. Just saying! I think this blog I added to my RSS will be a great help.

Using the diary of a girl who lived through the events of the disintegration of Yugoslavia at the end of the Cold War, this lesson explores the historical, political, and human aspects of this difficult time. This would be excellent for World History, Geography, and World Literature classes.

Education World: Wire Side Chat: Top Teacher Ties History to Current Events - 0 views

  • It's hard to pinpoint a few priorities as an educator, because there are endless goals every teacher has for every class and even every student. If I had to name a few main priorities I have, I would say: inspiring a strong work ethic and independence in students; ensuring that students master essential skills and become very knowledgeable about the content of study; helping students to recognize their talents and power to make positive change; and encouraging a passion for learning and social justice.
