The Relations of Early Television Viewing to School Readiness and Vocabulary
of Children from Low-Income Families
The Early Window Project,
2001, Child Development, September/October 2001, Volume 72, Number
5, pages 1347-1366. This study of television viewing among children
from low to moderate-income families shows that viewing child-audience
informative programs with quality content such as Sesame Street,
Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood, Reading Rainbow, Captain Kangaroo,
Mr. Wizard’s Word, and 3-2-1 Contact between ages 2 and 3 predicted higher performance
in reading, math, vocabulary, and school readiness.
