My future goal is to become an ESL teacher so that I chose an article that describes strategies for improving reading among ESL learners. Even if it is an article on adults ESL readers I believe it can be used in teaching adolescent age as well, starting with an intermediate reading level The purpose of the article is to encourage students read books by introducing them to various genres of popular fiction such as romance, westerns, science fiction, comic books. The teacher brings a variety of books to class and lets the students decide on four of them to read during a few week period of time. After reading they participate in book related discussions. The questions are built both by the teacher and the students and are meant to activate the students prior knowledge. They are directed sot that they relate to their real life experiences and previous reading. The students also are asked their opinions about the reading. What I realy like about the whole strategy is that there is not direct language instruction and the teacher is more like a partner and the students are encouraged to take the lead. I believe this will really help the ESL learners become more confident in their reading skills as well as in using the language to communicate their ideas.
