While SDN and SD-WAN have the same background and start with SD, they are not the same. You need to understand the difference between these services to choose the best one for your company.

The shared background of control and data plane separation allows them to run on commodity x86 hardware. Both can be virtualized, but the difference is that SD-WAN focuses on connections between locations over WANs, while SDN focuses on the internal network, i.e., LAN or the core network.

On the other hand, the differences between SDN and MPLS are many. SDN is cheaper while being efficient, while MPLS is reliable and maintains the quality of real-time protocols, despite the MPLS cost.
