ArcGIS - 0 views

The ArcGIS online software gives students and teachers access to a simple, user friendly, online version of the GIS software used by professionals. There are many built-in data layers, like roads, topography, aerial satellite imagery and bodies of water. Most GIS data is free public information that can be downloaded from government and university websites. The website's use for education is expanding, as they have partnered with National Geographic and the MD Association of Outdoor & Environmental Educators to share and create data for classroom use. Students can make maps of a field trip site or look at the tree cover over their school. Completely interactive for students and customizable by the teacher to set up class maps or activities. Online tutorials (free) are available and maybe necessary for teachers with no GIS experience. 30-DAY TRIAL IS FREE. BALTIMORE COUNTY HAS SOFTWARE LICENSE. I am unsure of what the cost is, but I'm sure it is a lot.

Leafsnap is an iPad or iPhone app that identifies a plant based on your photograph of the leaf. This is a wonderful resource for students and teachers trying to identify plants while outside because it has all the information of many field guide books in one mobile tool. Once you take the photo of your leaf, the app gives you lots of information about the plant (or a list of possible matches) along with detailed photos of the plant's fruit, bark, flowers, seeds etc. Students can also explore the database of plant photos and information on the leafsnap website. Student Mood Circles - 0 views

Student mood circles can be used for all students in the classroom to silently communicate to the teacher and other students how they are feeling. The circles are about 3" in diameter and made from red, yellow and green construction paper that has been laminated. Each student picks up a circle as they enter the room, corresponding to how they feel: green is good and ready to learn, red is not happy and yellow is somewhere in between. The student places the circle on the corner of their desk. This helps with last minute planning of the lesson and can sometimes prevent student melt downs and disruptions. FREE

Any color of card stock, graphic organizer or map can be placed into a heavy duty sheet protector (with or without 3-holes on the side) These are a great help to use in the field to protect student work from water and soil. They can be used so that students can write on a paper and want to be able to erase, using dry erase markers on the sheet protector. I like to use them as portable whiteboards for students. Students can write their thoughts for a quick assessment or exit ticket and be able to share it with the teacher by holding it up. COST IS $20 FOR A CLASS SET (sheet protectors and cardstock)
