Firesheep: Baaaaad News for the Unwary - 0 views

  •
"Firesheep," a new add-on for Firefox that makes it easier to hijack e-mail and social networking accounts of others who are on the same wired or wireless network. Firesheep was released this past weekend at the Toorcon hacker conference in San Diego. To protect yourself, 1. Use secure sockets layer (SSL) encryption to scramble the initial login - as indicated by the presence of "https://" instead of "http://" in the address field when submits your user name and password. 2. Use only secure wifi, no more coffee shops for you.

Google and TU Braunschweig independently develop self-driving cars - 0 views

  •
There's a Toyota Prius in California, and a VW Passat halfway around the globe that let the cars drive themselves. CMU and Stanford engineers have designed a programmable package that can drive at the speed limit on regular streets and merge into highway traffic, stop at red lights and stop signs and automatically react to hazards. Google estimates self-driving vehicles are at least eight years down the road.

Wright State researchers developing skeletal scans to recognize terrorists - 0 views

  •
The Wright State Research Institute is developing a ground-breaking system that would scan the skeletal structures of people at airports, sports stadiums, theme parks and other public places that could be vulnerable to terrorist attacks, child abductions or other crimes. The images would then quickly be matched with potential suspects using a database of previously scanned skeletons. The adult skeleton has 206 bones. Size, shape, density and joint structure make each skeleton slightly different. Throw in an extra lumbar vertebrae or extra rib as well as previously broken bones, implants, screws and other identifying characteristics, and the signatures become even more individual. And the skeletal structural features are fairly stable throughout adulthood. X-rays, gamma rays or other forms of body scanning would be used to create a bone signature for each person. Wright State researchers are currently working on identifying key elements and measurements of the skeleton that differentiate one person from another.

Acer's dualscreen laptop leaks out with Core i5 CPU? - 0 views

  •
Acer's 2.67GHz Intel Core i5 processor with dual fifteen-inch multitouch screens, making both the Libretto and MSI's 7-incher look positively dated by comparison. Sadly, this device is "still slow and buggy," so retail availability is probably a long while off.
