As renewable power generation facilities are being connected to the power grid, need arises to better control this new energy sources (as many of them are, by nature, fluctuating). To do that you need to use some kind of control signals that are secure enough for such a critical system. Recently Los Alamos National Laboratory have successfully employed quantum cryptography (QC) to encrypt control data for the electic grid.
