Teacher Libranian resources for using Web 2.0 tools

This wiki was created for school library media specialists by Dr. Donna Baumbach and Dr. Judy Lee, University of Central Florida. The purpose is to provide information about some of the new web-based tools (Web 2.0) and how they can be used and are being used by school library media specialists and their students and teachers. Much of the information--including identifying a need for this kind of information--is the result of a survey conducted in 2008 of over 600 school library media specialists about their knowledge and use of web-based tools in library media programs.

"The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The NEA presents The Big Read in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and in cooperation with Arts Midwest. The Big Read brings together partners across the country to encourage reading for pleasure and enlightenment. The Big Read answers a big need. Reading at Risk: A Survey of Literary Reading in America, a 2004 report by the National Endowment for the Arts, found that not only is literary reading in America declining rapidly among all groups, but that the rate of decline has accelerated, especially among the young. The concerned citizen in search of good news about American literary culture would study the pages of this report in vain. "

The survey also says school librarians are most positive about the value of social networking in education, but they're frustrated with their school districts blocking access to Web sites like YouTube and Facebook.

The survey found that 62% of the respondents belong to a social network. Within the educator subgroups, 61% of teachers, 51% of the principals, and 71% of the librarians indicated they are members of a social network. Educators believe that social networks could provide significant value for education.

The "Kids & Family Reading Report, 5th Edition" survey from Scholastic launched on January 8 with findings, including what kids are reading for fun, the makings of a frequent reader, and what kids want to read.

According to this survey of teachers, conducted by the Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project in collaboration with the College Board and the National Writing Project, the internet has opened up a vast world of information for today's students, yet students' digital literacy skills have yet to catch up....Given these concerns, it is not surprising that 47% of these teachers strongly agree and another 44% somewhat believe that courses and content focusing on digital literacy should be incorporated into every school's curriculum.

A report about college students and their information-seeking strategies and research difficulties, including findings from 8,353 survey respondents from college students on 25 campuses distributed across the U.S. in spring of 2010, as part of Project Information Literacy. Respondents reported taking little at face value and were frequent evaluators of Web and library sources used for course work, and to a lesser extent, of Web content for personal use.
