As School Library Media Specialists, it is expected that we connect our students and staff with the information and resources that they need for everyday learning. In today's digital world of social media and Web 2.0 tools, it is vital that we are not only sharing these new tools with our school community, but modeling their use for communication, collaboration and professional development. The articles and websites below reinforce the importance of Library Media Specialists being experts on the use of Web 2.0 tools.

Beyond the Book: Infographics of Students' Reading History - 19 views

"Recently, I've also been fascinated by the way the human mind interprets visual symbols. From doodling to reading and writing text, the brain is wired with a proclivity for visual sensory ability. In order to help students harness this power, we have been trying our hand at visual notes and sketchnoting in class. Then I decided to try some lessons with infographics."

Pegby: Peg it up, Move it Around, Get it Done. - 19 views

Pegby wants you to stop using those sticky notes that seem to be everywhere on and around your work desk, and instead use their cards and stacks to manage tasks. Their task management board is divided into mainly three columns - pending, in process and done (you can add more columns if you need them), and in each column you can add cards which are basically tasks and their descriptions. Different cards (tasks) can be combined together into a named stack, each card or stack can be dragged or dropped across columns. You can also invite people and jointly create and manage tasks. Each card can be customized in various ways. Its color can be changed, it can be tagged and much more. There's a way to filter your board too if you think it's full of clutter. Features: * Manage tasks through online cards and stacks. * Have family members use it along with you. * Add columns to the board, drag and drop cards. * Similar tools: Corkboard, Pindax and WallWisher.

Don't Shush Me! In Some Libraries, It's OK to be Loud | MindShift - 22 views

Buffy Hamilton, who calls herself “The Unquiet Librarian,” holds the phone receiver away from her ear at Creekview High School library in Canton, Ga., revealing a cacophony of noise in the background.
-
Creekview High School’s media center looks and sounds nothing like the silent libraries of the past. The new emphasis on collaborative learning and the use of digital tools to produce dynamic research projects lead to a louder, more hands-on environment that can prove beneficial to students later on in college. Hamilton says graduates have returned to thank her because their digital skills are more advanced than those of their classmate

The shift to a noisier and more interactive library model is relatively new in U.S. public school systems. Some examples are evident at universities and private schools in Georgia, New York and California, all of which have taken a lead in transforming their libraries. In Massachusetts, the Cushing Academy, a private boarding school for high-school students, gave away its collection of over 20,000 books two years ago and transformed its library into a digital center with e-books and searchable databases.
