  • 65% of college freshmen read for pleasure for less than an hour per week or not at all
  • The percentage of non-readers among these students has nearly doubled—climbing 18 points since they graduated from high school
  • By the time they become college seniors, one in three students read nothing at all for pleasure in a given week.

  • Not reading won’t kill you, but it will also make you a less interesting, engaged, and intellectual person
  • reading literature also helps to develop an individual’s emotional literacy
  • Reading about an event or the inner working of someone else’s mind or emotions stimulates the human brain to experience those same feelings or to essentially have the same experience in terms of memory that they would have if they actually did the activity or experienced the emotions themselves
  • The main activity of a college education is critical thinking and intellectual engagement: most of the background work for this endeavor is done through reading
  • Ubiquitous video, or some other information technology, may one day overtake the written word as the foundation of our literacy, but for the moment, reading and writing are the keys to full and fruitful participation in human society

As recently as 2007, there was note of an alarming trend of young people not reading

  •
Welcome to the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) Standards for the 21st-Century Learner Lesson Plan Database, a tool to support school librarians and other educators in teaching the essential learning skills defined in the AASL Standards for the 21st-Century Learner. Users can search the database for lesson plans by learning standards and indicators, content topic, grade-level, resources used, type of lesson or schedule, keyword and much more. In addition, registered users can bookmark lesson plans in a portfolio for future use, rate and comment on lesson plans in the community, print to PDF and socially share lesson plans on the web, and create and publish their own lesson plans in the database. Submissions to the Lesson Plan Database are vetted by AASL reviewers to ensure lesson plans published are of the highest quality. The lesson plan template was developed using the Action Example Template from Standards for the 21st-Century Learner in Action. All lesson plans published are aligned with AASL's Standards for the 21st-Century Learner and are crosswalked with the Common Core Standards.

"France in the Year 2000 (XXI century) - a series of futuristic pictures by Jean-Marc Côté and other artists issued in France in 1899, 1900, 1901 and 1910. Originally in the form of paper cards enclosed in cigarette/cigar boxes and, later, as postcards, the images depicted the world as it was imagined to be like in the year 2000. There are at least 87 cards known that were authored by various French artists, the first series being produced for the 1900 World Exhibition in Paris. "

The Business Case for Reading Novels - Anne Kreamer - Harvard Business Review - 14 views

  • in fMRI studies of people reading fiction, neuroscientists detect activity in the pre-frontal cortex — a part of the brain involved with setting goals — when the participants read about characters setting a new goal. It turns out that when Henry James, more than a century ago, defended the value of fiction by saying that "a novel is a direct impression of life," he was more right than he knew.
  • they discovered "a significant relation between the amount of fiction people read and their empathic and theory-of-mind abilities" allowing them to conclude that it was reading fiction that improved the subjects' social skills, not that those with already high interpersonal skills tended to read more.
  • It's when we read fiction that we have the time and opportunity to think deeply about the feelings of others, really imagining the shape and flavor of alternate worlds of experience.

The laptop untethered us from the fixed desktop location and allowed technology to become mobile. A new range of devices is now breaking many of the final shackles of computing use that were not conducive to effective educational practice. A range of these devices have been available for many years but it was the release of the iPad that has seen wide educational acceptance of the alternative mobile device.

Library Operating Expenditures: A Selected Annotated Bibliography | Professional Tools - 12 views

  •
Like academic libraries, school libraries rely primarily on their parent institution for financial support. The latest nation-wide expenditures figures for school library media centers in public schools comes from Characteristics of Public Elementary and Secondary School Library Media Centers in the United States: Results From the 2011-12 Schools and Staffing Survey published in August 2013. The "Selected Findings" summary in the beginning of the Adobe Reader PDF version notes -- -- During the 2010-11 school year, public school library media centers spent an average of $9,340 for all information resources [Information resources include such items as books, periodicals, audio/visual materials, database licensing, and software. They do not include salaries, computer hardware, or audio/visual equipment.] (table 4). This includes an average of $6,010 for the purchase of books and $490 for the purchase of audio/video materials [Includes all copies of any tape, CD, DVD, or Blu-ray]. -- The number of holdings in public library media centers per 100 students was 2,188 for book titles and 81 for audio/video materials at the end of the 2010-11 school year (table 5).

Looking For Real-World Math Problems? Try Google Earth! | MindShift - 9 views

  •
"One of the most common questions math teachers hear from their students is, "why does this matter?" They are constantly trying to convince students that math is useful and could help them in their everyday lives. But it can be a tough sell. Word problems alone often feel contrived and students see right through them. Thomas Petra has taught math at every level for more than 20 years and encountered dubious students at every grade level. That's why he developed Real World Math, a free website with lessons based on Google Earth aimed at grades 5 - 10. "I was trying to show them actual applications of the math ideas that they see in the textbook," Petra said."

At its most basic level, Activate Instruction is a free open database of standards-aligned learning resources-but it was designed to be much more. Teachers can browse, search, rate, add, share, and organize resources. Parents and students can follow teachers to see what they posted or search for the resources they like best.
