I've been asked to design a library of the future in a "what if" scenario-- I have some ideas but thought it would be helpful to ask this crew. So if you could design a 21st library-- what would it contain, who would it serve?

flexible, different spaces for different needs e.g. whole class study tables, quiet study rooms that can also be used for multiple purposes eg watching videos), conversation corners, reading corners, comfy chairs that can be moved around, laptops, wireless (forget about desktop computers), mobile shelving, great lighting, love a cafe area outing on to the library where kids can read/study/eat/drink; using technology eg ebooks. Great display areas....just to start :)

Sustainability is the key for me. I wondered about the balance you will have between a real space and a virtual place. Like Yvonne I think it should be a space and place where people make connections. The blend you create could offer opportunities to concentrate activity and support individual paths to learning. I see it as a people rich model.

I am working on something similar, a potential article for SLJ. I can send a draft in about a week if you are interested.
