I'm sure we all remember learning cursive for a year in elementary school, and I bet the majority of us haven't written it since. What do you think about the new Common Core standards eliminating cursive from the curriculum? How big of an impact do you think it has on the next generation of kids?

I think this article really brings up the question of what's more important: teaching skills relevant to the future, or past? When looking back on historic documents, cursive is the main form of writing. But, as the author points out, social media and the decreased use of the post office has largely ended the necessity of writing in cursive. I think that because cursive is dying, it shouldn't be included in the common core. I am grateful that I learned it, however struggling to keep it in the basic education of kids seems like grasping onto tradition when it's no longer relevant. Furthermore, translations of old documents written originally in cursive can be found on the internet, and once cursive is taught less often, there won't be a problem with not being able to read a relatives or friends writing.

I remember being drilled in cursive throughout elementary school, and again in junior high. But I think the real value in learning cursive is speed- taking notes is really much quicker with cursive, and it's certainly easier to churn out a quick rough draft before class. I've never thought that using cursive in class should be required- sometimes, someone's writing is neater in print than in cursive. All in all, I think it's important for kids to learn cursive in elementary school just to have that skill and that option, but it doesn't need to be something you're graded on.

I don't know that we really need to teach cursive anymore--it can be so difficult for kids to learn, and has such little value. Its very challenging to kids with motor issues, and it doesn't help much in terms of their ability to take notes, etc....it's not much faster.

I like cursive and I think it can be helpful for students. I don't think it should be required, but I think that it should still be an option for students to learn it. I actually still do use cursive sometimes and I like having the option, but in the long run I think that computer literacy skills are more important.

The only thing I use cursive for is signing my signature (which is generally illegible anyway) and doodling in class. I think that cursive is generally unnecessary, although I don't know how I feel about eliminating it completely.

The reason that cursive was common is because it is a faster way to write without being illegible - and for me, since I use it often, it is exactly that. I think we should stress typing more than cursive, but if we don't teach cursive, we should be teaching shorthand and other writing strategies for taking quick notes on paper, which is difficult to do even with cursive.
