15 Academic Vocabulary Resources | TESOL Blog - 1 views

  •
This list of online vocabulary resources is great for helping English language learners enrich their academic vocabulary repertoire. Note from Julia G: I also use vocabulary.com (PC and App). I like the Progress page where you ( and students) can actually see the level of engagement with the site.

Thanks Julia Don't the students find the definitions complex. I've seen quite a few and wouldn't expect the students to understand . - or do you get them to wrote their own. What levels do you do it for?
  •
Adrian - as per our on the stairs chat - not really suitable for lower levels. I get SS to interact quite extensively with the words they choose and certainly encouragie them to find a definition that they can remember and add that to the notes for the word.

10 Habits Worth Starting in the Classroom - A.J. JULIANI - 0 views

  •
from subscription to A.J. Juliani :When we look at what research says about becoming better at something, two pieces of evidence stand out. First, we must have clarity on what our goals are, and where we want to go or what we want to become. Second, it is deliberate practice (combined with feedback loops) that increase the myelin in our brain and in turn help improve performance and growth. Today I want to talk about a process that we often miss when we look at student success in the classroom. We tend to talk about growth, goals, and instructional practice…yet, we miss a key element of going from "defining a goal" to "achieving a goal" with out students. It's about building better learning habits. We often talk about strategies, but forget that our habits as teachers and leaders impact the habits of our students. Students only become better at writing through deliberate practice, and feedback on the practice. But if students do not have the habit of writing every day, it is extremely difficult to improve that practice and reach their writing goals. Here's where habit stacking becomes essential in our classrooms.

The Economist - videographics - 0 views

This should take you right to the videographics page. A range of 'typical' academic topics are presented, visually, in an engaging manner. Great for looking at the language of trends, comparison, for note-taking, jigsaw listening. You could also use a freeze screen/frame for a spontaneous presentation. Lots of ways to use it in the EFL classroom. Other areas of the site are also useful.
