Inhabitat » GREEN ROOF TILES by Toyota Roof Garden - 0 views

  • GREEN ROOF TILES by Toyota Roof Garden by Emily While green roofs may be universally accepted as wonderfully sustainable landscapes for a myriad reasons, the thought of installing one atop your own home may nevertheless seem daunting, expensive, and difficult to maintain. But the folks from Toyota Roof Gardens (a subsidiary of the Prius-creating car company) have solved your green roof installation qualms with a tile-based system that’s as easy as laying down carpet. The TM9 self-watering turf tiles measure twenty inches square, and connect directly to irrigation systems, making them entirely self-watering. And at a slim 2 inches thick, the tiles lightweight and do not require any additional structural upgrading to your existing roof. At only $43 per tile, the TM9 system provides a modular, easy-to-install, cost-effective option for green-minded homeowners. In terms of maintenance, the tiles need only be cut once a year, thanks to a special breed of Korean velvet grass. And of course, like all green roofs, you’ll rest easy knowing that your easy installation is providing a natural cooling effect, thermal insulation, and a little extra flora in your home environment. + Toyota Roof Garden Via GreenGeek

this may be an expensive option. $27 per square foot. also does not absorb water/requires irrigation, so cannot be considered a particularly sustainable product.

Zero Carbon House > Project details - 0 views

  •
this is from 1992 projetc, not the crazy up projetc, but a simple and perhaps efficient project... i just doubt about the zero energy in their house, coz of so much glass and usual roof and some cement on basement... etc ... but to be read.. no effort for the design, just a normal standard house done in green (?)

Inhabitat » ILLUMAWALL by DUO-GARD - 0 views

  • Current applications include both interior and exterior walls, as a canopy roof, and a countertop. As a simple exterior wall, the LEED applications are obvious, as the translucency of the IllumaWALL system allows diffused daylight into any space while minimizing both heat gain and glare. Architectural Record and Buildings Magazine sung the praises of IllumaWall this past December, including IllumaWALL on their list of top products of 2006.
  • Made of translucent polycarbonate panels and custom-programmable LED’s, the applications for IllumaWALL seem both endless and endlessly entertaining. The array of Duo-Gard’s IllumaWALL’s colorful lighting schemes is made possible by the programming capabilities of LED’s, whose versatile nature can transform the wall from steady ambient glow to a light show of pulsating colors in seconds. On-Site Reuse of Concrete From Demolition Projects for New Construction Projects - 0 views

shared by saltydrawers on 12 May 07 - Cached
  • On-Site Reuse of Concrete From Demolition Projects for New Construction Projects– Rich Jones, John Gottleib, Richard Scheidet, and Peter D. Pohlot During 2006, Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) demolished 10 buildings/structures while constructing 2 new facilities (the Research Support Building and the Center for Functional Nanomaterials). This paper details how the concrete from the demolition projects was re-used as part of the new construction projects at a significant cost savings to the Laboratory. BNL has an authorization from the New York Department of Environmental Conservation to operate what’s known as the “Borrow Pit”. The Borrow Pit is an area where sand was mined for a Laboratory project, leaving a large void space in the firebreak area south of the Laboratory. The authorization allows BNL to fill the void space with Construction & Demolition (C&D) debris. Approximately 4-years ago when the Borrow Pit was close to capacity, a decision was made to bring in a concrete crusher and mine the Pit to generate Recycled Concrete Aggregate (RCA) to be used around the Laboratory’s firebreak road system to stabilize the roadways and as new road base for new parking areas and roads. Prior to this, the Laboratory purchased virgin crushed blue stone to stabilize the firebreaks. During 2006, numerous older structures (pre-1950) were demolished due to issues such as advanced stages of deterioration, energy inefficiency, and repairs not being cost effective. The following table details the buildings that were demolished and the respective amounts of material (in tons) that were recycled (concrete and metals) and the remains that were sent off-site to a C&D management facility (i.e., roofing shingles, lumber, siding, etc…) Building Concrete Metals C&D 86 300 3 260 326 5 0 18 400 parking lot 2000 0 0 422 80 0 160 445 2600 2 12 527 0 0 150 707/707A 220 20 0 707B 32 0 0 715 6 0 6 753 12 0 12 750 CT & Tank Storage 250 10 0 Totals (tons) 5505 35 618 These demolition projects generated over 5500 tons concrete, which was crushed at the Borrow Pit and recycled as RCA (see Figures 1 and 2). The majority of this RCA (approximately 4800 tons) was used as the predominant base for the parking lots of the two new construction projects – the Research Support Building and the Center for Page 2 Functional Nanomaterials (see Figures 3 and 4). The remainder was used for position: absolu
