  As a young graduate student learning to write fellowship proposals, I took a course in which the main assignment was to write a research proposal. This involved several rounds of peer-review and professor-review with feedback to develop a finished proposal. We then held mock grant review panels that gave us the opportunity to view each other's proposals form the perspective of reviewers and give additional feedback. This experienced opened my eyes to the value of iterative peer-review.
