Wheelchair Transfer Simulations to Enhance Procedural Skills and Clinical Reasoning - 0 views

  •
This was a study that looked at more effective ways to train students in wheelchair transfers with more dependent patients. Typically, the curriculum allows for transfer practice using other peers. This study occurred in a high-technology laboratory with SimMan technology and mock hospital suite. The SimMan replicates what a dependent transfer patient would be like. The mock hospital suite simulated an acute care setting, complete with medical equipment, vital signs, lines and drains in place. Scenarios were developed for the students with the assistance of practicing occupational therapists. These scenarios included an acutely ill patient, a critical medical management event that occurred during bed-to-wheelchair transfer and occupational need. Students completed 66-88% of transfer items correctly and showed that simulated scenarios were more difficult that practitioners rated them. Student rated this simulation as an effective, more realistic teaching tool. Students attributed this kind of simulation as a positive contribution to curriculum and promoted greater procedural and clinical reasoning skills.

Occupational therapy for stroke patients after hospital discharge - a randomized contro... - 0 views

  •
This articles discusses the effectiveness of occupational therapy for stroke patients following discharge from a stroke unit. There was an experimental group and control group who received no follow up appointments following discharge. Both group were compared one year post-stroke. The article discusses that there were few significant findings, in terms of activities of daily living, IADLs, mood, and percieved quality of life. However, the number of adaptive equipment requested was greater and re-admissions to the hospital was smaller following the one year. This articles points out that stroke patients need occupational therapy services in order to help make sure they have all the resources they need when returning to home post stroke and living a healthy lifestyle following.

Case Simulations to Discover Clinical Reasoning Skills in Occupational Therapy Students - 0 views

  •
This study was conducted in order to grasp a better understanding of occupational therapy students' level of clinical reasoning skills at varying stages of learning during the course of their schooling. Based on study results, all of the students in their first year, 70% of students in their second year, and 20% of students in their third year demonstrated pre-reflective thinking. Furthermore, no first or second year students and only 20% of third year students were able to function at a level of reflective thinking. This study provides great insight for clinical instructors, allowing instructors to be more attuned to their students learning needs and better equipping them to develop clinical reasoning skills necessary in order to provide patient-centered care. Clinical instructors who are working with individuals in the pre-reflective thinking stage should encourage their students to voice their own opinions and justify their rationale, as well as consider others opinions, and should be given feedback in order to improve their confidence and encourage further development of clinical reasoning skills.

Psychosocial problems and barriers to improved diabetes management: results of the Cros... - 0 views

I thought this was an interesting study, and there are more articles about this DAWN study, but it is especially pertinent because in this rotation, I encountered many patients with uncontrolled diabetes and end stage renal failure. This article describes how psychosocial issues are frequent among patients with diabetes, and that medical professionals are not equipped to deal with the issues. Enter OT. I think this is something we could excel at.
