According to AOTA, a OT student can provide therapy services under the supervision of a registered occupational therapist. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the clinical educator to provide an adequate level of supervision that best suits the needs of the student while ensuring safety and privacy of clients. What makes for optimal supervision of a level II student is to begin with direct one on one supervision and slowly decrease to less direct supervision over time as the student begins to demonstrate competence and confidence with client care. This is how the student is able to learn and apply theory and techniques to interventions used in the clinic. Ultimately, it is important to be able to establish the level of supervision with your clinical educator and when it is time to decrease direct supervision.
