Results suggest that fieldwork experience has the greatest impact on the development of a therapist's preference for a specific area of clinical practice. Even more so, the students' responses support the idea that supervision is the most critical component of the fieldwork experience and that the effectiveness of the supervisory process is determined primarily by attitudinal and interpersonal variables. Students described fieldwork experiences as positive when supervisors had clinical experience, were well prepared, enthusiastic, stimulating, involved, gave positive feedback/insights and were open to student input. Instructors who had little clinical experience, were uncertain of theory and its clinical application, were inconsistent, unenthusiastic and 'burned out' were less likely to have a positive impact.
