This document provides insight into stroke rehabilitation from an occupational therapy standpoint. Throughout my rotation at Bethany, I have worked alongside many individuals who have suffered a stroke. As mentioned in previous blog posts, strokes vary from person to person in terms of their residual impairments and road to recovery. This document proposes three different phases individuals go through during the recovery process. In addition, the document suggests that occupational therapists treatments should align with a specific phase. For example, if an individual is in phase three "re-establishing life roles", occupational therapists should focus their treatments on facilitating task performance and role achievement, whether that is through compensation or adaptation techniques. Before addressing this in therapy, it is important to determine what is important to the individual and have they reached a point where they are realistic about their current situation. All in all, this document reinforces the importance of not only addressing physical impairments, but also looking at the individual in terms of their psychosocial needs. http://ajot.aota.org/article.aspx?articleid=1862537&resultClick=3
