This article used twenty focus groups with 112 participants, comprising trainee and educator paramedics, occupational therapists and podiatrists. The focus group discussions addressed participants' definitions of professionalism, the sources of their perceptions, examples of professional and unprofessional behavior, and the point at which participants felt one became 'a professional'. Through analysis they found views of professionalism were complex, and varied within and between the professional groups. They also found descriptions of professionalism were broken down among three categories individual references, interpersonal references, and societal-institutional references. The three categories overlapped and combined in different ways, creating a complex conclusion for professionalism as something highly individual, but constrained or enabled by context. Professionalism is developed over time and with experience.
