This Eleanor Clarke Slagle Lecture by Elizabeth June Yerxa in 1966 explains the importance of the true meaning of professionalism in occupational therapy. She explained that professionalism means being authentic practitioners and being able to meet real needs, being unique, and having and acting upon philosophy. Through the use of authenticity, occupational therapists collaborate with their clients, are affected by their clients, and affect their clients. It is important to realize as professionals in occupational therapy, becoming a lifelong student is necessary to provide evidence-based practice and also contribute to the body of knowledge. More importantly, personal authenticity as an occupational therapist means that the therapist allows himself to feel real emotion as he enters into mutual relation with the client. Yerxa challenges future therapists to discover their own authenticity as a professional in occupational therapy by determining our own degree of faith to the profession and our clients.
