When thinking of having a new career, one may review the ethics in which that career enforces but may not take it much into consideration because they believe they are 'ethical enough' or the code will not apply to them since they have never had issues with that before. It is always important to review the ethics and codes of any job you may be accepting or career in general.
The AOTA has formed an Ethics Commission (EC) to enforce their ethics and code. One of the many roles of the EC is enforcement of disciplinary actions when an individual, or group, has committed actions in which are against the OT Code of Ethics and Ethics Standards. One may not know that once these disciplinary actions have taken place, names, reason for disciplinary action, dates and etc are published on the AOTA website for the public to see. The only exception to this would be in cases of those individuals receiving reprimands. The following link is the AOTA EC enforcement of disciplinary actions: http://www.aota.org/Practice/Ethics/Enforce.aspx.
In order to stay informed about recently updated issues, frequently asked questions, additional resources, complaints, etc, AOTA has formulated a page to these specific concerns and more. Reading the FAQ page is an easy to read document that is helpful in answering a current or future OT/OTA concerns about AOTA's code and ethics. The following link will provide more information: http://www.aota.org/Practice/Ethics/FAQ.aspx.
Complaints can also be filed on AOTA members through the EC by any individual believing there may be violations of the OT code of ethics. The EC receives, deliberates, and acts upon such complaints when they are filed against AOTA members, or AOTA members at the time of the alleged incident. Complaints can only be made through mail and have all information about event and individuals, filer and offender, in order to be considered. The investigation of complaints and rendering a decision on varies from several months to about a year, depending on the timeliness of responses to correspondence and whether or not appeals are requested. Information is not provided to the Complainant until a final decision, including appeals, has been made.
