As healthcare professionals, it is required to obtain licensure in order to protect our patients. Licensure also serves as a safeguard for the profession, the practitioner, and the community by preventing non-qualified individuals from practicing. Three core values that reflect the commitment and responsibility of occupational therapy practitioners include justice, truth, and prudence. Justice requires the practitioner to adhere to laws and standards that are established by governing bodies including local, state, and federal laws. Truth requires OTs to be faithful, accountable, accurate, and authentic in our attitudes and actions. Prudence explains that OTs should be self-disciplined in securing and maintaining all of their credentials required by the state in which they are practicing. This web source also includes a great case study related to ethical standards.
