As outlined in principle three in the Occupational Therapy Code of Ethics, occupational therapy personnel shall respect the right of the individual to self determination, privacy, confidentiality and consent. This article reviews HIPAA and discusses ways in which occupational therapists can ensure to protect their patients confidentiality. In addition, the article discusses exceptions to HIPAA and penalties associated with breaking patient's confidentiality. I have found that during my first rotation the days can be extremely busy/chaotic and sometimes it is easy to walk down the halls and discuss with a another therapist about a patient or sit your computer down while it is open with patient's information displayed on the screen. These are times when it is extremely important to pay attention to your actions and watch what information you are revealing to others.
