Although most health care providers are able to define ADHD and understand what it is, sometimes it is hard to get this information a crossed to patients and/or their families. This is especially important when a child has been newly diagnosed with something they do not necessarily understand. When their primary caregiver has not been able to clearly define their diagnosis, it may fall onto the OT to do so.
This site provides two separate short videos that can be targeted for the family of the child as well as the child itself. The first video is just an informational, which includes what ADHD is and how it can be treated. The second video is a cartoon of 'Jack and Jill' that provides what it is like for someone with ADHD and a better understanding of what it is. It is very important that the client understands what is going on within themselves so they can also work with you to 'treat' it.
In regards to this diagnosis, ADHD can be treated through alert programs that allow for the children to learn how to self-regulate because of their sensory processing difficulties. Also, sensory diets are useful within this population in order to provide the type of stimulation that is needed to remain focused. Lastly, the brain gym could be utilized in order to improve communication between the left and right side of the brain by using the whole body in movement.
