Eide Neurolearning Blog: Famous People with Dyslexia: Dinosaur Hunter Jack Horner - 0 views

  • "I found my first dinosaur bone at the age of eight during a fossil-hunting trip with my father...Kindergarten through eighth grade was extremely difficult for me because my progress in reading, writing, and mathematics was excruciatingly slow. I would never stand to read out loud in class, even if the teachers threatened to give me failing grades...Eventually, I managed to graduate high school, but just barely, having received Ds in all required classes, including English, in which my grade was a D minus, minus, minus. The teacher told me that this was essentially an F, but that he never wanted to see me again. That was indeed the last time I saw him, but I did send him a copy of my first book!
  • There was, however, one area of school besides P.E. in which I excelled: science projects."

I will post articles and references that I am using as I set up a resource room for our digital students. I will pose questions and ask for the wisdom of the crowd. I hope my students, parents, educators and friends will help build this site as a resource to all. Thanks to Istvan for this unique photo. http://www.flickr.com/photos/i_csuhai/2984029909/"

Learning How to Learn Assistive Technology (one of my presentations) "Toolbelt Theory" suggests that we must teach our students how to analyze tasks, the task-completion environment, their own skills and capabilities, an appropriate range of available tools… and let them begin to make their own decisions.

This is another Ning network I am on that you might like to check out. Michelle DeCraene, Florida, created the network and she provides some interesting discussions. I was really interested in the discussion about virtual worlds and accessibility. It hasn't been too active lately so maybe we can contribute to the conversation. Check out her profile on MirandaNet-she's been involved in some amazing projects with special ed. and technology.

Wrightslaw - The "Write Stuff" For Preventing and Treating Disabilities by Virginia Ber... - 1 views

  • two kinds of writing disabilities. One group has initial trouble learning to read; the children respond well to instruction, but have persistent problems with writing. One of these children commented to this author, "OK, so now you cured my dyslexia; now what are you going to do about my dysgraphia?"
  • For many other children, writing problems develop even though they learned to read quite easily.
  • several reasons for writing difficulty: a) underdeveloped spelling, handwriting or composing skills, singly or in combination; b) processing problems related to handwriting, spelling and composition to included orthographic or phonological coding, fine motor planning, automatic letter retrieval and production, working memory, and so forth; or, c) attention deficit disorder. In addition, some children have simply not had a program of coordinated, explicit instruction in all the component skills needed to develop a functional writing system.

The Kid Should See This. - 3 views

  •
There's just so much science, nature, music, arts, technology, storytelling and assorted good stuff out there that my kids (and maybe your kids) haven't seen. It's most likely not stuff that was made for them... But we don't underestimate kids around here. Off the grid-for-little-kids videos and other smart stuff collected by Rion Nakaya and her three year old co-curator."
