The Vietnam War: A Soldier's Experience - 0 views

  •
An honest and (sometimes) brutal look at soldiers' lives during the Vietnam War. There is a haunting collection of war photography and an overview of the war itself. It should be noted that this site is highly biased with a Western sphere of knowledge and should be used with that understanding. Note: pictures on this site may not be used due to copyright law.

The "antagonists" part of this site is an interesting contribution. On one hand, it is nice to have it laid out so bluntly but on the other, who can honestly say who the "antagonist" is in war?

This part of the site is a little tricky because it requires students to have a strong understanding of what information they want to research (and what information they are looking for in the results) before using the search engine.

Links are lacking and there is no way to suggest additions (unless the user uses the "contact" info on the website). The lack of links and citations makes this site particularly difficult for research use.

I particularly like the formats of these maps. The only disappointing part is that the maps only cover 1820-1939. It would be interesting to see colonalism covered in some of these contexts as well

These regional maps can be used by the teacher to help students locate the area of interest and work on their map reading skills. It might be beneficial to have these mpas laminated around the room so students can reference them when needed.

These subcategories (intro, geography, people, gov, economy, communications, transportation, military, and transnational issues) are all aspects of social studies that can be examined individually or collectively in understanding other countries and comparing it to the US.

This website provides students with historical and contemporary information about 266 countries in the world as well as a variety of maps to help with building geography skills.

The site relies on state of the art technology and satellite imaging. Students get a fantastic look at places in 3D, so that locations are not just places that students have to imagine but they can visit. It is really useful to teachers because they can pull up this information in class. The site is also useful for geographical concepts because students can see terrain and topography.
  •
Google Earth is a fantastic way to take students to any country in the world! As long as you have a computer and a projector, students can have amazing images of different countries. They also have features to help you study topography and maps.

Internet African History Sourcebook - 0 views

This is a highly useful source, a derivative of the Internet History Sourcebook series, which focuses on African history. It is particularly helpful as it's full of difficult to locate sources for periods that are often dependent on oral histories and secondary sources.

An interesting and not often heard take on Michelle Rhee's reforms in Washington D.C.

While this is not directly a lesson planning website. I think it's really important for social studies educators to understand the issues that students, teachers and schools are facing. In order to be informed and powerful in our work, we must understand the entire context.

Lesson Plan: Historical Perspectives: Coming Home from War. PBS Teachers - Resources Fo... - 0 views

The homecoming experiences of soldiers in World War II, Vietnam, and our current wars are very reflective and telling of national attitudes toward each respective war/conflict. This can help students put these events into a larger historical context.

The phrase "Support the Troops" was everywhere a few years ago. Its usage has disappeared a little bit now, but what it really means is still very open for interpretation.
  •
As another tough topic to tackle in the high school social studies classroom, this multimedia-based PBS lesson plan aims to help students grades 9-12 understand the difficulties encountered by US soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. Television, internet, and many other factors have changed the way we view war and receive our veterans. The lesson plan examines the conditions faced by troops returning from not just Iraq and Afghanistan today, but also from Vietnam and World War II. Like the other collection of lesson plans I posted earlier, this is material that can be a little bit emotional, especially for students who have a family or friend connection to veterans.

Lesson Plans - Migration: Why People Move - 1 views

This lesson encourages students to use websites such as the US Census Bureau and the UN Population Division in order to research a migration in history of their own selection.

I would use this lesson in a middle school geography class but it could also be used in a US history class in a unit on immigration.
  •
This is a great lesson for a middle school geography class that would get students thinking about peoples' motivations for migrating from one place to another. The lesson plan includes objectives and standards as well as the lesson procedure. There are also ideas for extension activities.

There is a research aspect at the end of the curriculum where students are expected to take the knowledge they have gained and apply it to a historical or contemporary organization/group that engages in terrorist acts.
  •
This curriculum provides various lesson plans, activities, graphic organizers, resources, and a video to have students connect world events to their own lives and others in their community, in relation to understanding global terrorism.

This would be a good "jumping off" point for a discussion on what it means to protect a culture and how a culture can be threatened. I would definitely use this in any middle-high school course

Hidden in this tab are chances for students to get involved in policy discussions across the world. For example, the Ibero-American Youth Forum was just held in Seville, Spain for spanish speaking youth interested in discussing global tourism and global landscapes. These are great opportunities to get students involved in international issues.

Check this out! It's one of the best European history sites for kids I've found. Challenging activities for all age groups. I would definitely use this in an elementary classroom as a "free time" activity or suggest it as a resource for students looking to write papers on the subject.
  •
Website with infinite information on the First and Second Napoleonic Empires.
  •
Even though Napoleon's empires often get skimmed over in world or European history courses, this website makes the subject worth an extra day or two. There are easily comprehended histories, research databases, pictures, and even a "kids' corner" that is accessible to even the most reluctant student.
