    This is the teacher's section of the AAG (Association of American Geography). It is a professional society, located in D.C. (would be a good organization to tap into for DCPS teachers, guest speakers?). The free sample lessons available for download on the bottom are best because they offer cross-curricular lessons, great for team teaching and connecting to all standards not just social sciences.

      A teacher could use this site to understand the reality that they will most definitely teach to students who do not speak English, and deciding a plan for how they will approach this situation. Also, they could use it in a social studies classroom as a visual demonstration of a widespread social change.

    First, I love the Berbers. Second, this article serves as a great example of the issues that arise with language instruction. I think it is important to study comparative education, in order to help us see our own education system more clearly.

      This website was created by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. Their collection includes thousands of letters written during wars of military service. It is an active site, and they ask people to send in war letters to expand to the collection.

      As people get older and they come across old letters in the attic, hopefully they will want to contribute their personal correspondence for a greater public understanding of war.

      I think this would be a great activity during the study of any war. It would also make for a great activity on Veteran's Day. Using Joellen's SOAPS (speaker, occasion, audience, purpose, subject) analytical tool, students could examine different letters.

    The Gilder Lehrman Institute created this site on letters written during war. You can view copies of original letters written by soldiers, generals, presidents, and family members during conflicts from the Revolution to the Persian Gulf War. But wait, there's more: actors read the letters aloud while you read along. They have organized the letters by five different themes: Enlisting, Comforts of Home, Love, Combat, and The End of War. Each theme includes letters from all different eras of US history.

      I found this statistic about hispanic drop-out rates really alarming. Considering that the Hispanic population is quickly growing, education policy makers should be moving this to the forefront of their concerns.

      This was something that I personally ran into in my practicum. Better information needs to be distributed regarding college financing. There is a stigma in lower-income areas about taking out college loans and a lot of misinformation. When I taught a lesson on saving and investment for an Economics class, I spent the majority of the lesson answering questions regarding this and reminding students that college is an investment and that it will pay-off in the end. An example that worked really well was the game of Life, since many students have played it. In the board game if you go to college in the beginning, you will end up in the better retirement home in the end.

      Both parts struck me. Encouragement is so important, because if your teacher doesn't encourage you, who will after all? Second, a problem we have at McKinley is that students that go to college get distracted and overwhelmed by college and dropout the first year. This is important on two fronts, we need better college prep programs in high school and also the colleges and universities need better support systems for first generation college students.
