  • According to those requirements, teachers must be "highly qualified" in reading, math, writing, education and social studies.  Most new teachers hired this year passed only a certification exam in a specific subject, according to the Dallas Morning News.

      The online map room is maintained by the University of Texas at Austin, and it is frequently updated with new scans and additions from the library. The folks at the library can be contacted by computer or telephone.

      The site has a plethora of maps, but I think their modern political maps/historical maps are most helpful. For teachers, this is a great resource to help students understand and analyze history.

    The Perry-Castaneda Map Collection at the University of Texas-Austin has a great selection of online maps. They have modern political maps, historical maps, maps about history, regional maps, thematic maps (population, climate, energy, ethnic, religious). Many of the maps have large PDF formats that are of great quality and detail.

  • The townspeople were in such dire straits that they sold all of their cattle to him in an attempt to survive the drought. A short distance out of town, slowly driving the cattle north toward Texas, Captain King realized that, in solving an immediate problem for the people of Cruillas, he had simultaneously removed their long-term means of livelihood. He turned his horse back toward the town and made its people a proposition. He would provide them with food, shelter and income if they would move and come to work on his ranch.

      This tells the story of how the "King's Men" came to the King Ranch. Captain King purchased an entire town's cattle during a drought and then realizing that he had taken their livelihood, he asked them to all move and work on the ranch. While this page does celebrate the skills the Kinenos brought to the ranch, I cannot help but feel that there is a hint of paternalism in the situation, too.

    Chapter 7 of Takaki briefly mentioned the fabled King Ranch in Texas which led me to check out their website. It provides a history of the ranch and its various industries. This page is about the Kinenos....and provides an interesting look at their history on the ranch.

    In which John Green teaches you about the Mexican-American War in the late 1840s, and the expansion of the United States into the western end of North America. In this episode of Crash Course, US territory finally reaches from the Atlantic coast to the Pacific Ocean. After Oregon was secured from the UK and the southwest was ceded by Mexico, that is. Famous Americans abound in this episode, including James K Polk (Young Hickory, Napoleon of the Stump), Martin Van Buren, Zachary Taylor, and Winfield Scott. You'll also learn about the California Gold Rush of 1848, and California's admission as a state, which necessitated the Compromise of 1850. Once more slavery is a crucial issue. Something is going to have to be done about slavery, I think. Maybe it will come to a head next week.
