This article had a lot of positive things to say about how social networking impact on teens. Based on research done by prestigious universities they have found that social networking has encouraged young adults to learn useful skills such as developing technical skills, explore interests and self expression. Kids today are learning important technical skills that will be necessary for them to be competitive citizens in the digital age. Research also showed that young people who learn with digital media are usually more self directed and in-depth. They also tend to be more motivated to learn from their own peer influences which are provided in social networking.

Thanks Abigail. After reading this, a point to ponder comes to mind. They mention that it is up to parents to monitor what is being expressed and that they have a presence in their child's online social network. If social networking is used in the classroom, how much responsibility does the teacher have? How do we inform the parents? What is their role in this case? Any thoughts?

Hi Glori, That is a great question. I think the teacher's job is to be involved in the students' interactions with social networking to keep it relevant to learning and to monitor students' interactions making sure they are using proper netiquette. Parents should also be monitoring students' interactions. I think having multiple parties monitoring student behavior students are more likely to remain on task and be polite to their classmates.
