    In a first official indication of the government's thinking, Indian telecom minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has said his ministry is in favour of maintaining Net neutrality as the internet is an instrument for the masses.

    "The internet must promote local as well as global. For India, Net neutrality is very important," a leading daily quoted Prasad as telling visiting US undersecretary of state Catherine Novelli.

    Net neutrality means telecom service providers treat all traffic on the Net equally and not charge more for particular classes of consumers, apps or content. India's leading telecom service provider Bharti Airtel had kicked up a storm last month when it imposed higher charges for making internet-based phone calls.
