This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) solicits Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) applications from small business concerns (SBCs) that seek additional funding to support the next stage of development for cancer-relevant projects that were previously funded under SBIR or STTR Phase II awards from any Federal agency. The purpose of this FOA is to facilitate the transition of SBIR or STTR Phase II projects to the commercialization stage. This FOA is expected to promote partnerships between Federally-funded SBIR or STTR Phase II awardees and third-party investors and/or strategic partners to facilitate and accelerate the capital-intensive steps that are required to commercialize new products and services. Applicants must submit a Commercialization Plan, which should include details on any independent third-party investor funding that has already been secured or is anticipated during the Phase IIB Bridge Award project period. It is expected that the level of this independent third-party funding will be equal to or greater than the NCI funds being requested throughout the Phase IIB Bridge Award project period. Proposed projects may address preclinical and/or clinical stages of technology development. Clinical trials may be proposed as appropriate but are not required.   

The Small Business Liability Relief and Brownfields Revitalization Act ("Brownfields Law", P.L. 107-118) requires the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to publish guidance for grants to assess and clean up brownfield sites. This Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) seeks to stimulate research on and development of (R&D) wearable, mobile-based, or other technology (software applications, etc.) to collect continuous data on variables assessing functions of daily activities in individuals at risk for or with Alzheimer's disease (AD) or AD-related dementias (ADRD).

The Information Directorate of the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL/RI), Rome Research Site, is soliciting white papers under this announcement for innovative technologies to enable the effective management of information for military operations. Focus: The objective of this BAA is to develop and demonstrate middleware to bridge the tactical and enterprise domains, realizing decentralized IM services built upon client-based protocols for use at the tactical edge that can coexist and interoperate securely with the server-based IM services that are well-suited for deployment in enterprise-scale environments. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) invites Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant applications for funding to perform research leading to the development of novel and supportive technologies for the improvement of cell replacement interventions using novel methods, biomaterials and devices for type 1 diabetes (T1D) treatment.

The purpose of this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is to advance translational research for rare musculoskeletal, rheumatic or skin diseases by supporting preclinical projects conducted by small business concerns (SBCs) to develop biomarkers and/or therapies. The 2010 Institute of Medicine Report "Rare Diseases and Orphan Products: Accelerating Research and Development" (https://www.nap.edu/read/12953/chapter/1) called for active involvement and collaboration by the public and private sectors, and emphasized the role of NIH in integrating various stake holders into a comprehensive strategy for supporting all phases of rare diseases research. NIAMS supports research on rare diseases and orphan drugs through various grant mechanisms including research project grants, center awards and training/career development awards. SBCs play an important role in disease research by developing innovative technologies and increasing the commercial application of federally supported research results. However, it can be more challenging for SBCs to achieve profitability in rare diseases research and development due to inherent scientific risks and market limitations caused by the small number of individuals affected by each disease. With this FOA, NIAMS intends to support and enhance research and development conducted by SBCs that may lead to important biomarkers and/or treatments for rare musculoskeletal, rheumatic or skin diseases.

Secretary of the Air Force Heather Wilson announced in September 2017 inception of the "S&T Strategy 2030" study. The study's objective is to update the Air Force methods for conducting research and development (R&D) to meet the projected national security challenges of 2030. Secretary Wilson appointed the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to lead this strategy development. The Air Force's goals for the study are: 1. Evaluate technical approaches and focus areas to advance the Air Force's mission through R&D; and 2. Improve Air Force processes and organizational structures to manage early stage research.

The Course Hero-Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for Excellence in Teaching will support rising stars in the academy who love teaching, demonstrate excellence as educators, and are making their mark as exceptional researchers, poised to shape their fields. Designed for young scholars working towards tenure, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship is a "genius grant" that will emphasize the balance between scholarly excellence and commitment to teaching practice that draws on new approaches to pedagogy, creating a new level of engagement for students in and beyond the classroom. In short, Fellows will be emerging heroes in their fields, on a clear trajectory to become great college educators. In its inaugural year, the Course Hero-WW Fellowship will identify five outstanding junior faculty members. Fellows will receive a one-year grant of $40,000-approximately $30,000 to support the engagement of a student assistant and the balance to be used for research and travel support. Exceptional candidates teach in ways that build student confidence and mastery of a subject; encourage critical thinking; explore foundational concepts through the lens of broader themes and global events; promote the power of learning communities beyond the classroom; leverage technology to complement the classroom experience; consider and serve different learning styles; prepare students for lifelong learning; and can serve as replicable teaching models for other educators. This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) encourages Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) applications from small business concerns (SBCs) that propose the development of therapeutic agents for disorders that fall under the mission of NIAAA.  An identified candidate, having sufficient bioactivity, stability, manufacturability, bioavailability, in vivo efficacy and/or target engagement, and other favorable properties that are consistent with the desired clinical application, is required prior to application. The FOA supports Investigational New Drug (IND)-enabling studies for the therapeutic candidate. At the end of the funding period, a successful project should have, at a minimum, an IND application submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). The program supports early-phase clinical trials, although these are not required.

This funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is intended to support Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grants that develop novel technologies for the purpose of advancing the National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention's "Zero Suicide" goal of preventing suicide events (attempts, deaths) among individuals receiving treatment within health care systems. Zero Suicide is a commitment to the prevention of suicide among individuals served by health care systems and is also a specific set of health care strategies and tools intended to eliminate suicide events. Research is still needed, however, to implement these goals effectively, and the incorporation of health information technology (health IT) products into this care program is critical. As such, this FOA specifically supports SBIR grants to develop technologies that enable healthcare settings to improve the development, management and/or delivery of services under the Zero Suicide framework.

The involvement of small businesses in translational aging research could substantially hasten the pace at which scientific advances are transformed into commercial products to improve or maintain the health and functional independence of older adults. Therefore, this funding opportunity announcement (FOA) is intended to encourage a greater involvement by small businesses through the SBIR mechanism in transforming scientific advances in aging research into novel devices, products, health care practices and programs that will benefit the lives of older adults. For the purposes of this FOA, T1 translational research on aging is defined as the application of basic and clinical biomedical or basic behavioral and social research findings towards the development of new strategies for prevention and treatment of age-related pathologies. T1 translational research approaches could include the development of new research tools or improving existing technologies to diagnose, prevent or treat age-related conditions, functional decline and disability.

The objective of this announcement is to (1) develop baseline FXR system concept(s); (2) estimate and substantiate SWAP-C and effective isotropic radiated power (EIRP) under a flyaway cost constraint; (3) assess current technology and propose new technology development required to achieve capability; (4) assess performance; (5) conduct trade studies; and (6) optionally perform additional trade studies. The results of these activities with industry will help the Government inform potential FXR technology investments and assess risk of draft FXR requirements in particular with respect to the combination of SWAP-C, EIRP and acquisition cost.
