Slab in the face (Slab Urbanism)

'The Urban Cloak' proposal by Jonathan Gibb is an addition to an existing inner city 2 storey brick building, to adapt and add a multi-levelled apartment building. The existing building is left, but affected by the new. Its old roof is discarded and the paint of the facade shed, revealing the identity of the brick. HDB blocks built before 1990 were not provided with 100% lift access to meet demands for privacy. Today, residents prefer to have lifts on every floor providing speedier and more convenient access to their homes. This also benefits the elderly, families with very young children and the disabled.

This district situated on the left bank of the river Ebro needs to recover and revitalize the households built between 1945 and 1960. Thanks to Renaissance Programme a block of 360 households is being restored (there are 21 similar blocks in the city, with 8,000 households).

The building was formerly a hostel built for seasonal workers in Leeds back in 1939. It has since been remodeled and updated into a eco residential complex.

As a condominium building, however, an entrance hall was considered necessary, and thus added with proper security features. A community room was also created, since the entrance took on an important role of community focus to the whole condominium building.

The south wall panels extend 1.5 meters and the north wall panels extend 1.35 meters of the building. The walls are polished and worn its exterior paint.

The Westwood Tower is situated in a prime location on the Orchard Road, Singapore's Champs-Elysées. MVRDV propose an intensive refurbishment, revamping the tower to give it a new iconic expression which maintains the modest qualities of the existing layout.

Luca Peralta Studio, an Italian design firm based in Rome, has been awarded first prize in the 2014 MIPIM Architectural Review Future Project Awards for the category "Old and New ". The Architectural Review offers prizes for architectural excellence in unbuilt or concept projects that are examples of fine architecture, yet respond to the client's development brief and consider the impact of architectural contribute to the community around them.
