Plans for Park Hill began in the 1940's when Sheffield was desperately in need of housing after the war, but construction did not commence until 1957 and was not completed until 1961. The estate was built in 1963, and features four buildings for a total size of 20,000 m2, enclosing playgrounds, playing fields and green recreational areas. Their challenge was to renovate the existing buildings and outdoor areas, and for 5,000 m2 of additional housing.
HDB blocks built before 1990 were not provided with 100% lift access to meet demands for privacy. Today, residents prefer to have lifts on every floor providing speedier and more convenient access to their homes. This also benefits the elderly, families with very young children and the disabled.
The Westwood Tower is situated in a prime location on the Orchard Road, Singapore's Champs-Elysées. MVRDV propose an intensive refurbishment, revamping the tower to give it a new iconic expression which maintains the modest qualities of the existing layout.
