An algebra project focusing on a theme which interests students is more likely to engage them in the project, so lets take a look at sports. Many students participate in sports at some level, whether as part of a school team or a community team. For the most part these same students do not understand the costs involved to host the sport. Also, they do not understand how much money is needed to ensure a profitable season so the sport can continue from year to year.

from a flier: Wings is a research based program for children aged 3-6 that focuses on school readiness and pre-literacy skills such as numbers, letters, language/ congnitive development, comprehension, memory, problem solving, decision making, and creative thinking WINGS is a preschool literacy program for ages three to six that focuses on learning through play. The WINGS program uses developmentally-appropriate materials to boost a child's skills in areas such as memory, decision-making, cognition, and language. Each game has a specific developmental age, which allows children to work on skills that are appropriate to their current ability level. The board and computer games hosted by Hoagie in the series are colorful and attractive to the child. The games enrich memory, problem solving skills, comprehension, creative thinking and decision-making. Children in the WINGS program work one-on-one with a trained facilitator up to two times a week. Each child plays up to 26 times on either a board or computer game each year. On average, children enrolled in WINGS are able to increase their cognitive and language skills by 2 months for each month they are in the program. How can your child participate? Einstein is often quoted as having said "If I have an hour to solve a problem and my life depended on the solution, I would spend the first 55 minutes determining the proper question to ask, for once I know the proper question, I could solve the problem in less than five minutes." Clearly Einstein understood how to attack puzzling problems. As teachers we face a host of puzzles on a daily basis. Every student we teach, thanks to their idiosyncrasies presents a unique puzzle. The interactions between students further complicates things. Our goals for our learners, their learning needs, the demands of the curriculum, pressures from beyond the classroom all result in puzzles for us to manage and to solve.

This week I joined with teachers, students, researchers and policy writers at Melbourne University to discuss student voice. This conference was hosted by Social Education Victoria and made possible by the conference partners, The University of Melbourne, Education and Training Victoria, Foundation for Young Australians and Connect. Over three days, participants engaged in rigorous dialogue about the significance of student voice and what is required to ensure its benefits are maximised for all.
