The Kamakura period began with Minamoto no Yorimoto establishing the Kamakura Shogunate in 1192 in Kamakura. Minamoto referred to his new government as bakufu, which translates to "tent government". The Emperor gave the military title of Seii Tai-shogun to Minamoto and in Western literature his government is often referred to as the shogunate.

Japanese castles are an extremely important part of the country's history in architecture. These castles were constructed all over Japan for feudal lords called Daimyo. Castles served as a place for Daimyo to retreat after a battle or as a storage place for food and weapons.

Japan has been a land that has been torn by war and warlords for many centuries. Because of this there have been very many hundreds of castles and fortresses built over the centuries. Many of these castles still remain to this day and many of them have been rebuilt and restored to their original shape and condition.

In our last Instruction, we told you a little about the history of Japan from early times up until the beginning of "early modern Japan" in the 1800's. In this Instruction, we are going to concentrate on the culture of Medieval Japan (1185 - 1600), which was different from Japan's earlier Classical Period (which featured careful calligraphy, Zen gardens and tea ceremonies).
