The Institute for the Study of Knowledge Management in Education (ISKME) is an independent, nonprofit research institute that helps schools, colleges, universities, and the organizations that support them expand their capacity to collect and share information, apply it to well-defined problems, and create human-centered, knowledge-driven environments focused on learning and success.

Higgins is a framework that enables users and applications to integrate identity, profile, and relationship information across multiple data sources and protocols. Higgins is organized into three main areas: Higgins Selector, Identity Services (i.e. Identity Provider and Relying Party code), and the Higgins Identity Data Service.

Once students have gathered information on a topic, it is important that they reflect on whether the information they have gathered is sufficient to answer the research question. This requires students to make sense of the information they have gathered-to synthesize the information into new knowledge. In order to address the different leaning modalities that students possess, teachers should have students use a variety of forms of representation for this sensemaking stage (see Forms of Representation matrix).

X-Media addresses the issue of knowledge management in complex distributed environments. It will study, develop and implement large scale methodologies and techniques for knowledge management able to support sharing and reuse of knowledge that is distributed in different media (images, documents and data) and repositories (data bases, knowledge bases, document repositories, etc.). The project started in March 2006 and will last for 4 years. It has a budget topping Euro 13.6M, (9.9M from the EU). 15 partners are involved from UK, Germany, Italy, France, Slovenia, Greece and Norway.
