Semantic Web Technologies - has their time come in education? : Notes from the Future - 0 views

  • As JISC has recently announced an open call of funding for a study on Semantic Web technologies in teaching and learning we thought we’d use this opportunity to provide a bit of an update on Semantic Web developments. The JISC call seeks to fund a study which looks at pragmatic aspects of the actual use of semantic applications in real world scenarios. The successful applicant will review a number of case studies of real-world teaching and learning scenarios and look at the potential for use of semantic technologies. The key question they are asking is: “Can you convince us that semantic technologies offer one potential solution to some real problems?”

UMLS® Semantic Network Fact Sheet - 0 views

  •
The scope of the UMLS Semantic Network is broad, allowing for the semantic categorization of a wide range of terminology in multiple domains. Major groupings of semantic types include organisms, anatomical structures, biologic function, chemicals, events, physical objects, and concepts or ideas. The links between the semantic types provide the structure for the network and represent important relationships in the biomedical domain. The primary link between the semantic types is the 'isa' link. The 'isa' link establishes the hierarchy of types within the Network and is used for deciding on the most specific semantic type available for assignment to a Metathesaurus concept. There is also a set of non-hierarchical relationships, which are grouped into five major categories: `physically related to,' `spatially related to,' `temporally related to,' `functionally related to,' and `conceptually related to.'

The Semantic Learning Organization - 0 views

  •
The application of "Semantic Web" technologies to learning processes is receiving an increasing attention from the perspective of facilitating the selection, delivery and tailoring of learning experiences. But most of the current approaches are centered on the final interaction of the learner with the "learning objects" provided for him/her, neglecting the organizational perspective. From the viewpoint of an organization, the application of Semantic Web technologies should be motivated by the improvement of learning-oriented mechanisms, including both cultural and structural aspects, and considering the ideal of achieving a state of continuous improvement in learning behavior. Such an approach to achieving a "semantic learning organization" gives a complementary perspective to existing "educational Semantic Web" propositions. In this paper, the potential role of the Semantic Web as a driver for enhanced learning organizations is analyzed, and a conceptual framework for the notion of a semantic learning organization is provided.

The Semantic Web Gang - 0 views

  •
In September's edition of the Semantic Web Gang, regular members are joined by three guests to discuss the investment potential of the Semantic Web and semantic technologies. With continuing investment in (and acquisition of) companies for whom semantic technologies are a key part of their proposition, we explore the extent to which investors are interested in 'semantic technology' per se, and look at recent investments from Union Square Ventures to illustrate the wider discussion. A number of entrants to this year's TechCrunch 50 event feature a semantic technology focus, and we also look at these with the help of Union Square's Brad Burnham, TechCrunch's Erick Schonfeld, and VentureBeat's Chris Morrison.

Semantic Networks - 0 views

John F. Sowa - This is a revised and extended version of an article that was originally written for the Encyclopedia of Artificial Intelligence, edited by Stuart C. Shapiro, Wiley, 1987, second edition, 1992. A semantic network or net is a graphic notation for representing knowledge in patterns of interconnected nodes and arcs. Computer implementations of semantic networks were first developed for artificial intelligence and machine translation, but earlier versions have long been used in philosophy, psychology, and linguistics. What is common to all semantic networks is a declarative graphic representation that can be used either to represent knowledge or to support automated systems for reasoning about knowledge. Some versions are highly informal, but other versions are formally defined systems of logic. Following are six of the most common kinds of semantic networks, each of which is discussed in detail in one section of this article.

Aduna - News & Events - 0 views

September 23, 2008 Research, done by MarketCap in cooperation with Aduna, shows that more than 60 percent of companies with over 200 employees, intend to invest in a project that uses semantic technology (Web 3.0) within a year's time. Almost 10 percent already uses semantic technology, or has already defined a semantic technology project. The fact that 60 percent of the companies plan to invest indicates an enormous increase of the use of semantic technology in the coming 12 months. Companies abound in information, but only a tiny amount is used by managers, either because most of the information is not visible or connections are not, or cannot be made. This is the situation mid-2008, but with the rise of semantic technologies this will change drastically in the coming years. More and more information will come to light and it will become easier to judge its usefulness.

Book Review: A semantic web primer. - 0 views

  •
"Antoniou, Grigoris and Van Harmelen, Frank. A semantic web primer. Second edition. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 2008. " This is the second edition of the very popular primer that introduces the semantic Web. Explaining what the semantic Web is involves not only contrasting it to the familiar 'everyday' Web, but also sorting out the various visions of the semantic Web suggested over the last decade. Explaining how it works involves relating a thicket of angle-bracket technology to semantics and logic processing. This book is an excellent introduction to both of these explanations.

SemanticHacker.com is home of the TextWise SemanticHacker API and we're bold enough to call it the world's first open API for semantic discovery. Semantic discovery is a way to find information without knowing explicitly what you're looking for BUT "you know it when you see it." Semantic discovery does not punish you for using the wrong keywords. We built the API for clients and users to actively engage with our core technology - Semantic Signatures®. See our Semantic Signatures® in action on the right.

Manning: Explorer's Guide to the Semantic Web - 0 views

  •
A complex set of extensions to the World Wide Web, the Semantic Web will make data and services more accessible to computers and useful to people. Some of these extensions are being deployed, and many are coming in the next years. This is the only book to explore the territory of the Semantic Web in a broad and conceptual manner. This Guide acquaints you with the basic ideas and technologies of the Semantic Web, their roles and inter-relationships. The key areas covered include knowledge modeling (RDF, Topic Maps), ontology (OWL), agents (intelligent and otherwise), distributed trust and belief, "semantically-focused" search, and much more. The book's basic, conceptual approach is accessible to readers with a wide range of backgrounds and interests. Important points are illustrated with diagrams and occasional markup fragments. As it explores the landscape it encounters an ever-surprising variety of novel ideas and unexpected links. The book is easy and fun to read - you may find it hard to put down.

WebNet 2001 eLearning in the Semantic Web.pdf (application/pdf Object) - 0 views

  •
eLearning is fast, relevant and just-in-time learning grown from the learningrequirements of the new, dynamically changing, distributed business world. The term „Semantic Web" encompasses efforts to build a new WWW architecture that supports content with formal semantics, which enables better possibilities for searching and navigating through the cyberspace. As such, the Semantic Web represents a promising technology for realizing eLearning requirements. This paper presents an approach for implementing the eLearning scenario using Semantic Web technologies. It is primarily based on ontology-based descriptions of content, context and structure of the learning materials and benefits the providing of and accessing to the learning materials.

Thetus Publisher Thetus semantic knowledge modeling solutions provide a unique ability to view systems holistically and transcend a data-bound view of problems. At their core, semantic knowledge models are comprised of beliefs and facts expressed through human-readable concepts and relationships. Our flagship product, the Thetus Publisher™, provides a groundbreaking foundation for leveraging semantic technologies to create, manage and evolve semantic knowledge models. The Publisher platform is used in a broad set of integrated solutions ranging from systems for resource modeling to applications for intelligence and national defense.
