Toothpick Bridge Science Project - 1 views

  •
This activity is a challenge to see if students can construct a bridge built out of toothpicks. The challenge revolves around certain guidelines and at the end, the bridges are tested to see how well they are able to hold weight. This is another activity I participated in during my schooling. It taught all of the participants planning skills, craftsmanship, and also the ability to compromise. I think this is a more applicable activity than the tissue paper hot air balloon activity because it is a less tedious object to construct. I believe my future students will find this activity a welcomed challenge.

Hot Air Balloon Construction - 1 views

  •
This resource contains tips and instructions on building a tissue paper hot air balloon. I included this reference because I personally participated in this activity while in high school. It was higher on the difficulty level, however, it was extremely rewarding. This activity would better serve younger elementary students as a demonstration rather than a hands on activity. However, I think 4-5th grade students could handle the task of constructing their very own hot air balloon.

How To Make Ice Cream In A Bag - Tablespoon - 0 views

  •
This resources lists instructions on how to make Ice Cream in a bag. I think this is a great way to reward students for all the hard work they do while not completely letting them rest their brains (like they would if they were watching a video). Another thing I like about this lesson is that it could be performed with students at various ages. I could definitely see my future classroom participating in this activity after a lesson on reactions. I would also plan to use this activity on a partial day to keep the learning going instead of an activity like watching a movie. This is also a great way to incorporate an educational activity into a party.

Teaching NGSS Engineering Design Through Media - 1 views

  •
Teaching Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) Engineering Design Through Media is a collection of activities and professional development resources drawn from programs such as WGBH's Design Squad Nation and the Engineering is Elementary® project at the Museum of Science, Boston. Add your description and what you like/why you chose this resource. How would you use it?

Solar System Exploration: : Planets - 1 views

  •
This site was created by NASA's Planetary Science Division. Their hardworking robots explore the planets and more on the wild frontiers of our solar system. NASA keeps their websites up to date and are user friendly. I would utilize this website in conjunction with a lesson on the solar system. I would pair students up and the group would use the website to explore their planet and then they would create a travel brochure using publisher. Incorporating technology into the classroom is important and this allows me to do that.

Matter Chatter - 2 views

  •
This video helps students remember the three states of matter. I would use this in my class as an introduction to science each day. I like how it includes examples that the students readily encounter on a daily basis in the song. This is a great way to introduce students to a concept they have experience with, but are going to learn more about the specifics.

States of Matter - 1 views

  •
This project allows students a concrete example to include in their science journals. I like how the students place stickers on the examples to show the molecules. We would do this as a class, while exploring the dynamics of the three states of matter.

Silver Creek Nature Preserve - 1 views

  •
This is a great environmental field trip! I would use this in conjunction with a unit on the environmental impact and/or the various plants/animals present in our local communities. This is a beautiful nature preserve. I chose this resource because I have spent time on this preserve and it is remarkable. You feel like you are in your own little world and there is so many possibilities to explore. Students could be partnered up and sent on a photo scavenger hunt. They would journal their findings and upon returning to school we would discuss the many things they encountered.

Skittles Science - 2 views

  •
I think I would take three days to go through the scientific method from testable question to conclusion with my students and in the process we would do the experiment. Testable Question: Do Skittles dissolve faster in warm water or cool water? On the first day, I would introduce the question, hypothesis, plan, variables, and materials. Then on day two we would perform the experiment the students created while recording our findings in our science journals. On the third day we would improve our experiment and address any inaccuracies that developed. I like this resource because it gives clear directions and it is an affordable experiment to introduce students to a difficult process. The ability to make it hands-on makes it more memorable.

Phases of the Moon - 1 views

  •
Students will use oreos to create the phases of the moon. Each student needs 4 oreos and a paper plate. After the students know the phases of the moon and the significance of waxing and waning we would create the phases using the oreos. After they create their phases they may consume their creations while creating a foldable that they will place in their science journals. I am not a huge fan of this resource, but it was one of the better ones I was able to find.
  •
This collection is meant to be of the best resources we can find. If you don't love this one, please remove it from the collection. Also, please note that the moon phases are incorrectly represented in the oreo image included here.

The Lorax - 1 views

  •
This Dr. Seuss tale opens the eyes of the students to the world of recycling. After we read the book students will participate in a recycling relay. I chose this book because Dr. Seuss is a fun way to learn and the rhyming engages the students.
  •
This link goes to a collection of Seuss ideas. Which are you meaning to reference here, and how would you use it? I don't see a recycling relay activity on the link.

Planetarium Shows | Saint Louis Science Center - 0 views

  •
This resource includes the information for attending a Planetarium show at the Saint Louis Science Center. This planetarium has a show currently being shown called "The Little Star that Could." The trailer for this video can be found at the site listed. I have attended many educational shows at several different locations, but none seem to ever compare to the ones shown at the Saint Louis Science Center Planetarium. The format of the presentation really resonates with the observers and leaves a lasting impression. I would invite my class to go on a field trip to this planetarium after a lesson on the solar system.
  •
The Live Sky Tonight show at the Saint Louis Science Center could be an incredibly fun experience for students who are studying the night sky at home! In cooperation with creating some sort of sky map at home or at school using the internet as well as visual observations, both or either, the students could compare their own work with that displayed at the planetarium! This resource would serve as particularly helpful for visual learners who may benefit from this immersive model, and it might also encourage those who had not been as engaged in star mapping before to become more involved after the experience!

Oil Spill Cleanup - 0 views

  •
This lesson allows students to investigate which way is best to clean up oil and researching how oil spills affect the environment. The students will try three different ways to remove oil from a tub of water, then they will determine which way is the most effective. Afterwards, the students will present their findings to the class. I like that this lesson is engaging and it can easily be related to real world oil spills. I would tell my students that they were a team that was hired to find out how to get rid of the oil after the BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. This way the students feel that they are doing something realistic.

This link has lesson plans and activities that would useful in learning about food chains. It also has standards, objectives, and rubrics for the teacher to use. I like this link because it will be useful to guide off of for lesson plans, objectives, and activities. You can use the lesson plans and activities, or you can change them for your liking.

St. Louis Zoo Winter Program - 1 views

  •
The Delta Dental Winter Zoo program focuses on winter and the animals that live in winter specific habitats. For example, the event focuses on penguins for parts of the event. This field trip would allow the students to see animals of all different kinds. We would easily be able to focus on the winter aspect of the seasons, but we would also be able to tie in the other seasons. We would be able to discuss the other animals at the zoo and what season their normal habitat would be. We could then talk about why certain animals live in certain seasons.

Winter - 0 views

  •
This site would be used as a project resource. The class would be split up into groups or partners and they would present on one specific season. This site would allow for them to easily get information on one season. This site offered facts about winter, but also the history of winter and it's characteristics.

Spring - 0 views

  •
This site had facts specific to spring. I would also use this site as a project resource. The students could be separated into groups and present on a specific season and this site would allow for the students to easily get information on one specific season.

Summer - 0 views

  •
This site would be a great resource for a project. I could have the students break up into groups and then present on a specific season. This site would allow students to get information specifically on summer. This site offered facts about summer as well as some historical facts.
