"Is your fourth grader a hands-on learner? If so, just reading about the layers of the Earth may not be enough to inspire or even interest him. Turn the abstract lesson into a practical craft with the fun and colorful creation of dough earth layers!" This lesson plan lays out the layers of the Earth through the fun artsy craft of play dough creations. Basically the child will create their own personal batch of dough-incorporating color dye and close guidance. The student will then use their play dough to collaborate on the outer crust of the earth, the water, the land the inner core and the crust. Students are capable of physically making the play dough thin or thick in accordance to the knowledge of their information. They are applying their understanding of the earth and what it's made of basically at their own fingertips.

This would be my last step in a recycling lesson, or, "Recycle Week." I would have my children create recycling slogans to post around the school and create rules/conditions for the competition. The goal would be to have a competition between each grade and class to see who can gather the most recyclable materials in four weeks. There will be a class winner in each grade that will be rewarded with an ice cream party, pizza party, extended recess, etc., to be decided with the class.

I thought how fun and interesting it would be to have a hands-on science project for Dr. Suess' birthday. This is a website that explores different ways to approach hos books through pictures. I think that the children would love to have this project on a day that they are reading his books, and celebrating his birthday.

Fun idea, but I don't see any actual lessons, just pictures.

This site provides a multitude of lesson plans for many different grade levels of science. Teacher notes, student copies, and examples are all given in the lesson guidelines. I have used Arkive in the past for projects and have found it very helpful. I imagine using these lessons as supplemental activities for the lessons I teach in biology.

This website has a great variety of lessons and activities for children in relation to astronomy. I like the Earth, Sun and Moon link under the Games section. There are also quizzes, facts, videos and much more to explore!

I choose this website because it is interactive and fun for younger students. It also covers a lot of information that is useful in studying the solar system. For use in the classroom, I would have my students use this website as a resource in creating a project on the patterns in the solar system.

This website provides a hand on activity for students. They will all grow their own sunflowers, under different conditions. This website gives you all the different variables. It also provides extensions to the project. I found this website to be useful when talking about the life of plants and what they need to grow.

This is a link to the US Geological Service's website. The education portion is really neat. Since i have met my boyfriend, he is a miner, I have become more and more interested in rocks and the earth. This webpage makes it easy to find what you need. Their resources are broken down into categories (K-6, 7-12, and undergraduate). The best part about this is there is a place to look at 3-D pictures of major landmarks. You would need your own glasses, but I think if these were projected on a smartboard, it would be a great way to show students what Mother Nature can accomplish.

This activity will be done at the end of our plant unit. For this activity, students will label the four different things that plants need to grow. Each need can be revealed by flipping up the leaf. I chose this resource because plant needs is a very important concept in first grade. We will spend a lot of time discussing the different needs, so this project will be a great review at the end of the unit. It is valuable to me because it allows me to see if the students understand the needs of a plant. While some of the components of this activity cost money, I will instead replicate it myself by copying the pattern. Once these projects are completed, I will display them in the classroom.

Good choice for the end of the unit, once students have learned through doing what plants need.

This website includes many science fair ideas and projects. It is appropriate for kids in grades K-12th. I believe this resource could be used in the classroom if you were to have a science fair. Students can use this website to help give them ideas. This website woudl also be helpful to teachers because some of the experiments could be done in the classroom.

This site is an accompaniment to a children's show on PBS called Zoom. The webpage provides tons of science projects for kids, some of them in printable form for educators to use in class, that ask students to consider their discoveries without flat out telling them what they're supposed to be learning. There's a link for parents and educators as well. Free, and fantastic supplemental materials for elementary school kids.

This is a video from teacher tube about the parts of plants and what they need. I would show this video on the day that the students would make their chart craft of the parts of plants. I feel like this would flow with the craft project perfectly.

This reason for the project is to provide locations for birds to nest. With nature areas becoming smaller and smaller, birds are having a harder time finding hollow trees to use as nesting areas for their young. It is important to teach our students about conservation and the earlier they learn the more likely it is to become a part of their everyday activities.

This is an interactive site that provides a range of information and resources for students and teachers. The site includes videos, lesson plans, quizzes, games, projects and other resources. I chose this specific topic about animals because it can be used to teach students about the food chain. Students can interact with animals and other living things like plants and learn the process of how the food chain works.

This resource has a huge collection of early elementary science activities, projects, and labs. It also includes homework that is less pencil-and-paper based and more activity/exploratory based. Each category has different types of lessons outlined within it. Each of these lessons in meant to be 90 minutes long but they can each be changed very easily.

This project allows students a concrete example to include in their science journals. I like how the students place stickers on the examples to show the molecules. We would do this as a class, while exploring the dynamics of the three states of matter.

In this activity, students are put into small groups to construct 3D candy landform maps. To begin, students are given a blank outline of the United States on a large piece of paper and a landform map. Students must then map out where all of the major rivers, deserts, mountain ranges, plains, and oceans are. Next, students are given various candy, yarn, and paint with which to construct their map and key. I chose this activity for three main reasons. For one, it allows students to work with their peers to create a product. It also provides them with a link between social studies and science. Finally, students are very likely to be engaged in the project because both candy and painting are involved. I could see myself using this project in my classroom as a conclusion to a unit on landforms because it is a culmination of many different types of landforms as well as an application of what has been studied to an actual map of the United States, thus making a real-world connection.
