Biosciences - Our oceans and seas - 0 views

    There are five large oceans on Earth: the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Indian, the Arctic and the Southern (or Antarctic) Oceans. They are really one 'world ocean' a continuous expanse of water with the continents of the world like big islands of land in this. This is a perfect website to have as a resource when teaching about the oceans and seas. The website is packed with very rich information and great visuals over ocean currents, layers, and waves! Besides talking about the usual oceans topics like ocean life or level of the ocean floor, it covers topics that are less discussed in the classroom. Example from the website includes mapping the ocean floor, threats to oceans, and even fisheries. Another great feature about this website is that it includes an experience over ocean currents. Overall, the website can defiantly be a great source to add to the curriculum! Ways to implement this website into the classroom would be by doing the ocean current experiment with the class. Also, I know that the ocean is still one of the main mysteries to scientist to this day, so I think there is plenty of opportunities for students to use their creative minds. Examples of projects would be have students create what they think animals and plants look like that are undiscovered. The topic of oceans and seas is very broad and fascinating!

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration: Elementary Science Education - 0 views

    This website contains activities for all grade levels and covers many different topics including how new medicines are found in the ocean, climate/weather, lesson sets addressing ocean littering/pollution, make your own weather station, and more. It includes basic fact sheets or interactive projects and games for students to work on. NOAA also heads up a Teach at Sea program where kindergarden through college educators can spend a given amount of time on a boat with scientists, researchers, and the boating crew to gain new experiences about human impact on the ocean, marine life, weather, etc and bring that new knowledge back to the classroom. Live Video of the Ocean - 1 views

    This website allows you to watch live video feed of the ocean. This could be used in your classroom to watch for a few minutes each day during your ocean theme. Students could watch for ocean plants and animals that they are studying. This is a neat way for students to experience ocean life!

    This website contains a video about an ocean food chain. It is kid friendly and somewhat humorous. I chose this website because young students would enjoy watching this video and still gain knowledge of food chains. It only covers an ocean food chain, failing to touch on other environments. However, I would still use this in my classroom because I think young students would enjoy it. I would allow them to watch it after they finish an assignment early.

Under the Sea - Ocean Webquest - 0 views

    This is a webquest that students can complete over the ocean floor. It is divided into 10 days but could be completed quicker if needed. The webquest teaches students about the continental shelf, continental slope, and deep ocean floor. You will use the ocean floor diagram provided by the teacher to correctly label each part of the ocean floor. The is also a quiz and websites for students to use and explore.

Ocean Books - 1 views

    This is a website that contains twelve books all about oceans. They talk about sharks, marine mammals, crabs, seashells, fish, and much more. I enjoy this website because it lists the title of the book, the author, and a summary of what you will get from the book. In the classroom, I would have these out for the students to freely view while we talk about our oceans chapter. Some of the books would even be helpful as a teacher in order to teach a lesson and further the student's understanding.

Finding Monster Waves - 0 views

    In this lesson, students learn about the varying sizes of ocean waves, what causes the variation, and where to find giant waves. Students will learn the parts of a wave, and discuss wave height, wavelength, and wave period. They will experiment with creating waves on the National Geographic Wave Simulator and discuss how geography affects waves. I like this lesson because it gives students rural country areas (areas without oceans) insight into our oceans. This lesson could be paired with a lesson about ocean currents or temperatures (and temp. change). In addition to using the on-line program, I would bring in a giant aquarium with toy boats to show what happens with waves.

    This lab activity teaches students about convergent and divergent plate boundaries, structure of the earth, and the differences between oceanic and continental plates. Students use a fruit roll-up to present the oceanic crust, a graham cracker to represent the continental crust, and frosting to represent the asthenosphere. This hands-on activity shows students convergent and divergent plate boundaries, structure of the earth, and the differences between oceanic and continental plates. There are questions that go along with the activity to check for understanding. Then let the students eat the activity!

Geocaching - 2 views

    Geocaching is a great way to get kids outside and observing the world around them. Geocaching give you a set of coordinates and your job is to find the hidden object. It is usually a small box containing small trinkets like children's toys, CDs, coins from around the world, etc. When you find the box, you take something and leave something and you can track where your items go across the globe. They are literally all over the world. They can be found in oceans, on mountains, at gas stations, in the woods, etc. It would be a great field trip to take the kids out to a local bike trail (there can be more than 15 Geocaches on 1 trail) and take some time to be outside, talk about nature and try to find something cool! As a teacher, you can even make a Geocache for your class and check out who is finding it online. My husband and I have a Geocache of our own and go out geocaching often. It helps keep you active and allows you to enjoy the outdoors. Older students can also benefit from learning about coordinates.

Marine Geology- Plate Tectonics - 0 views

    This lessons discusses the four layers of the Earth. This website also shows the ocean floor, oceanic and continental crust, lithosphere, and asthenosphere. It also explains tectonic plates and continental shelves and shapes. I choose this website as a supplemental resource to teach about Earth's systems. This website is easy for students to read and understand. It also provides great images to help students understand these concepts.

    This resource has many ideas on the study of the ocean. The content is spread out from kindergarten all the way to eight grade with exploring the sea by different types of activities and experiments. One of the activities goes with our sensory ability to feel different sea objects and guess what they are. This would be a good activity to talk about the scientific reasoning. (Kinda like the first day of class activity.) In regards to studying the ocean, their are many topics that will be discussed and learned through the lessons on this topic.

    The Students will create an undersea environment in their classroom while researching interesting facts about their favorite sea creatures. Materials may be used such as crayons, colored pencils, markers, crepe paper (blue, green, red, yellow, pink), paper plates, construction paper, index cards, or books/magazines with pictures or illustrations of fish. Throughout the following week the class will all work together to turn their classroom into an undersea environment, and teach one another more about the creatures that live in the sea. I chose this source because it is an exciting way to jump into a unit about the ocean wildlife, and by choosing their favorite creature the students will get a chance to use creativity. Ocean animals are exciting to learn about because they are often unseen to the human eye, and decorating the classroom is a fun way to bring the underground waters to life. In the classroom I would use this lesson at the beginning of a biology unit to get the class excited, and allow them to work on something fun throughout the week. Displaying their work in the classroom will make the atmosphere bright and cheery!

Solar System - 5 views

    From our small world we have gazed upon the cosmic ocean for thousands of years. Ancient astronomers observed points of light that appeared to move among the stars. They called these objects "planets," meaning wanderers, and named them after Roman deities-Jupiter, king of the gods; Mars, the god of war; Mercury, messenger of the gods; Venus, the goddes of love and beauty, and Saturn, father of Jupiter and god of agriculture. This activity assists students with facts and knowledge on how the solar system works. By providing a diagram that assists the student in the order and distance of each planet, this activity provides the student with a realistic vision of what outer space looks like. I believe that this resource can be used to help students memorize as well as find interested in how the solar system works and how each planet is arranged, what their made of, their distance from the sun, ect.

    Edit your tag to be "solar system" so it is in one place. Remove "science" tag, as these are all science. Use teh grade level tags k-2, 3-5, 6-8, and/or 6-8 rather than broader ones like k-5.

Test Density With a Supersaturated Solution - 2 views

    This is an experiment in which students will compare three different solutions that have different levels of salt. Students will use food coloring in order to visually see which solution is the most dense and which is the least dense. They will also see how the density of a liquid affects the objects in it. I chose this experiment because while teaching about density, this will allow my students to receive a visual understanding. I also like this experiment's website because it offers questions to think about and has real life application as it talks about rivers, oceans, and the Dead Sea.

This app is so cool! The weather lab allows for students to come up with possible outcomes for weather in North America. It is a very interactive, fun, and realistic app. First students pick a an ocean current, air mass 1, and then air mass 2. After, the students are asked what they should wear or what they should be preparing for with the weather situation they just created. Ex. would be, If I live along the East Coast of the US I should... and then they would pick from the options given. This app would be awesome to incorporate when learning about weather. It allows for students to create different weather situations and then also they have to predict what will happen with the situation. I think it would be a great opportunity to have student collaborate with peers and come up with 3-5 weather situations and they should record the weather they created, what they predict will happen, and what actually happened with the weather. I think students would really enjoy this app in the classroom considering its not your typical weather game or activity.

    This resource is a lesson for 2nd grade, rainforest diversity. I specifically wanted to show step 2: Literature and Discuss. This step uses a children's book activity to engage students in the various elements of a rainforest habitat. I selected this resource because it shows an excellent activity that I can use with 2-LS4-1. I really like that this focuses on the rainforest and could be used to compare/contrast with other types of habitats such as deserts and oceans.

The Mariana Trench: Earth's Deepest Place - 1 views

    This is an activity to teach students about ocean trenches, how to locate the Marina Trench on a map, identify the depth, length and width of the Trench, and identify the country that has jurisdiction over the Marina Trench. The website also gives you a step-by-step lesson and how to teach the activity. There is vocabulary and additional activities included to use with your students. I could also integrate geography and mapping with this activity. The video is really great because it is an animated fly through that I think students would really enjoy!

    This website is a complete unit on plate tectonics for 6th grades. There is a planning guide, scope and sequence, activities, pre and post assessments, and formative assessments. All free and easy to download in as a PDF. The unit has been aligned with the science standards and would provides detailed instructions throughout. By the end of the unit students would know plate tectonics accounts for important features of the Earth's surface and major geological events, the location of earthquakes, mid-ocean ridges, and distribution of fossils, rock types, and ancient climatic zones.

Earth Day Carol is an app that provides a story (based on The Christmas Carol) that follows a little character who is plastic, and he learns all about himself and pollution. This app is awesome because not only does it provide a cute story line for kids to follow and be engaged with, it also has some interactive components. This app allows students to tap on the screen, providing pop up facts about pollution and our Earth. I chose this resource because I think it's really helpful in teaching young students the importance of a clean environment. In today's society, phones are becoming more and more prevalent. Students will automatically become engaged knowing that they're going to be learning through a phone/Ipad. This resource would be good to use around Earth Day. It adds a bit of a twist to the typical "board and marker" learning. Students can be in groups of two or three, and if Ipads are available in the classroom, students can listen to the story and take turns with the interaction parts. Once each student is done, a group discussion can follow to discuss what each student has learned.

The Open Door Classroom: 3D Landform Maps! - 1 views

    In this activity, students are put into small groups to construct 3D candy landform maps. To begin, students are given a blank outline of the United States on a large piece of paper and a landform map. Students must then map out where all of the major rivers, deserts, mountain ranges, plains, and oceans are. Next, students are given various candy, yarn, and paint with which to construct their map and key. I chose this activity for three main reasons. For one, it allows students to work with their peers to create a product. It also provides them with a link between social studies and science. Finally, students are very likely to be engaged in the project because both candy and painting are involved. I could see myself using this project in my classroom as a conclusion to a unit on landforms because it is a culmination of many different types of landforms as well as an application of what has been studied to an actual map of the United States, thus making a real-world connection.
