This is a comprehensive lesson plan that provides many options for the introduction and activities as well as reinforcement. This lesson also provides external interactive resources. I think this is a wonderful lesson for developing a unit.

Because observation, prediction, and communication are all very important science skills, this project works perfectly to help students improve in all of those areas! As a teacher, I would use this activity to tie in with telling time and with our Solar System unit. This project would ideally be used in a third grade class and be a good hands on project. I thought that it would be fun to keep a classroom sun dial outside so we could keep a chart about how accurate it worked or even use it as some kind of experiment. I think it's a very unique lesson and project. It's something that you wouldn't see every day in a Science class with that age group.

Remove "science" tag and add something more specific, like "earth science." To keep words together, use " " around the word. For example, remove the tags "sun" and "dial" and add one that is "sun dial". Grade level tags should be k-2, 3-5, 6-8, and/or 9-12 to be consistent among all the resources.

Application shows the earth and the day and night region at any location on the planet by latitude, longitude and altitude. I think this would be a fun activity to have the students do while talking about planets. It lets the students explore the suns rotation.The teacher could create a sheet asking students so draw where the sun is shinning and certain locations at certain times.

Another activity I have picked out for the children is a recycling word search. Young children enjoy finding things on their own, and word searches are actually quite good for cognitive development. Once again, something that will take their mind off of being in the school setting.

This website has a variety of unscrambling puzzles for young children. I would use this as an activity probably in the middle of "Recycling Week" to get children away from "schoolwork." Not only are the children learning words associated with recycling, they are also working on spelling and handwriting as well.

This is a great website that has tons of free lesson plans, videos, and quizzes. It covers a wide range of topics including, life science, physical science, the human body, and space. It includes content for grades K-12. It even includes interactive diagrams for students to complete. I think this resource could be used in the classroom in multiple ways. The activities could be used for instruction or reinforcement.

Very easy to search, by grade level or content area. The lessons I found were good foundations for particular content, but needed some sparking up, especially in terms of an engaging introduction.

This lesson is used to teach young students the importance of nature. Many students don't realize many manufactured items come from nature. Bring in everyday items from home and ask the children where they think the item came from (paper and books from trees, glass from sand, etc). Have different colored dots and walk around the classroom and label items with colors from what the item might have came from (green=trees, red=animals), this requires the students to think critically. It's important for children to respect nature and understand most everything we interact with on a daily basis is from nature. As a teacher I can use this to teach children respect of nature and each other because everything must work together.

This foldable could be used to help understand the layers of the Earth. There is a template for students to cut and paste onto construction paper. The layers of the Earth are already made so students only need to cut them out and correctly place onto the layer. The foldable comes with step-by-step instruction for students to follow. What a great way for students to visually see the layers of the Earth!

During a field trip to the Field Museum of Science a class/grade of students can experience many new scientific experiences all in one day! Most exciting is the world-famous fossil known as "Sue"; the largest, best-preserved, and most complete Tyrannosaurus rex ever found. Sue measures 42 feet long from snout to tail and 13 feet tall at the hip. She boasts 58 dagger-like teeth and cuts a fine figure as the Museum's most popular backdrop for visitor photos. We would never be able to experience a real activity such as this inside of a classroom, and the hundreds of ancient and new scientific wonders will have the students enthused to learn more about science. I chose this museum as a field trip that I would love to experience because it has a huge variety of scientific adventures for everyone to enjoy. The main attraction of a giant dinosaur fossil is a great real life encounter to show the children just how huge these prehistoric beings were. This would be a great wrap up experience to a unit on prehistoric earth or fossils in general, and would be fun and educational for all students and teachers involved!

I think this would be a good place to take students when talking about and exploring nature. Students could learn about different ecosystems and how animals live in nature. The watershed has several hands on activities for the students as well as scavenger hunts.

This website is a complete unit on plate tectonics for 6th grades. There is a planning guide, scope and sequence, activities, pre and post assessments, and formative assessments. All free and easy to download in as a PDF. The unit has been aligned with the science standards and would provides detailed instructions throughout. By the end of the unit students would know plate tectonics accounts for important features of the Earth's surface and major geological events, the location of earthquakes, mid-ocean ridges, and distribution of fossils, rock types, and ancient climatic zones.

The magic house is an ideal place for an elementary level science field trip. This website outlines what all the magic house has to offer starting with holiday specials, classic games, special school discounts, and specific learning standards that can be met. All around, the magic house is a good time for both students and teachers, simply because it's a fun and active way to explore science.

This activity can be used in conjunction with a lesson on rock formation. Each rock is formed through different processes and made up of varying materials. This project lets the students make there own sedimentary rock and observe closely how they are made up of different materials held together by one material.

This video uses humor and science to give a brief history and explain what constellations are and what they represent to both astronomers and ordinary people. I chose this resource because it's been my experience that kids LOVE BrainPOP videos. These videos are a useful tool because they make they make good use of humor while still conveying the facts behind the topic presented. They're also good because each video contains quizzes and other activities after the video. I would use this video to introduce what constellations are before having students look for them with either a telescope or a picture of the night sky.

This is a well rounded lesson plan that utilizes online resources as well as in class activities. This serves as a good introduction to the unit and gets the students to be creative. It also hits on multiple styles of learning.

This reason for the project is to provide locations for birds to nest. With nature areas becoming smaller and smaller, birds are having a harder time finding hollow trees to use as nesting areas for their young. It is important to teach our students about conservation and the earlier they learn the more likely it is to become a part of their everyday activities.

How plants grow; experiments with pumpkins Beginning, advanced beginning ESL students grades 2-6 Plant growth vocabulary; how pumpkin seeds grow into mature plants; floating and sinking; predicting and estimating. This lesson can progress through an entire chapter and the activities with growing pumpkins can help give visuals throughout the lesson.

The St. Louis Science Center is a great place for students to go to learn all about science. For all of the terrific things the Science Center has to offer, the students will be able to leave with a better understanding of everything around them that involves science. From the planetarium to the discovery room inside the Science Center, students will never get bored and there definitely will never be a dull moment. This is a great resource to use for any type of science related field trip. It also includes different information about the Science Center such as; student discounts, group discounts, and other activities that go on at the Science Center every day.

This is a field trip resource to the St. Louis Science Center, which allows students to see science in real life and go through simulations. I chose this resource because I think that all children enjoy going to the Science Center, and they would be having fun while learning about the content. I would use this as a field trip opportunity.

Off the Rail is an exciting app that let's kids build and enjoy their very own roller coasters in a virtual environment. The fun is in the on the fly building while they are riding the coaster. With varying difficulty levels and extras to add lots of interest to each coaster, this app is one that will have little creative minds going for hours. I like this app because it will get my students creative minds thinking! It really encourages the students to use STEM! This app could be used when students finish their work early or it could even be used as a center.

This application allows for students to build their own roller coaster in a virtual reality. I really like the idea of students creating and constructing things. This application lets students create whatever their mind wants to. I believe that creativity is an easy way for students to become engaged in a lesson or activity. I would personally use this app to supplement a lesson focusing on force.

Salt water is denser than ordinary tap water, the denser the liquid the easier it is for an object to float in it. When you lower the egg into the liquid it drops through the normal tap water until it reaches the salty water, at this point the water is dense enough for the egg to float. I think this is a neat activity that kids would enjoy, and yet it requires very few supplies and clean up. I would first group students, giving each group a glass of freshwater and an egg. They would first put the egg in the freshwater only to see it sink to the bottom. They would record what they observed and possible reasons for why it sank. I would then give them another glass that is about half full along with a salt shaker. The students would be told to mix a lot of salt into the half cup and then slowly pour some of the freshwater into it. The egg is expected to float in this solution. The students would record their observations and possible explanations. This is a good way to start a lesson about density.
