Biological functions and clinical implications of oestrogen receptors alfa and beta in ... - 0 views

  • ERα-positive cells respond to E2 with increased proliferation
  • ERβ was artificially introduced into these cells, E2-induced proliferation was inhibited
  • The proliferative response to E2 seems to be determined by the ratio of ERα/ERβ. The functions of ERβ in the breast are probably related to its antiproliferative as well as its prodifferentiative functions
  • ...7 more annotations...
  • The risk of developing PC seems to be related to the diet
  • In the human prostate, ERβ is expressed in the basal epithelial cells and AR in the luminal epithelium.
  • For many years, DHT was considered to be the main hormone guiding prostate development and function. However, the idea was challenged when in 2001 Mahendroo et al. showed that mice in which both forms of 5α-reductase had been inactivated, have a normal functional prostate [50]. The question was then raised as to what is the real function of DHT in the prostate. In 1989 we hypothesized that DHT is a precursor of an oestrogen, 5α-androstane-3β,17β-diol (3β-Adiol) and that physiological levels of an oestrogen could be produced in the total absence of aromatase [51]. We later demonstrated that 3β-Adiol is abundant in the prostate and is a good natural ligand for ERβ
  • The overall effect of oestrogens in the immune system is determined by a balance between ERα and ERβ signalling
  • The hypothesis of our group is that ERβ plays an important role in regulating the differentiation of pluripotent haematopoietic progenitor cells whereas ERα induces proliferation
  • In tissues and cell lines of mammary epithelium for example, it has been noticed that E2 in the presence of ERα elicits proliferation, but in the presence of ERβ it inhibits proliferation
  • ERα and ERβ have distinctive tissue distributions and to the great surprise of endocrinologists [7] many tissues previously thought to be ‘oestrogen-insensitive tissues’ were found to be ERβ positive and oestrogen sensitive. The most notable of the ERα-negative ERβ-abundant tissues were the epithelium of the rodent ventral prostate [8], the granulosa cells of the ovaries [9] and the parenchyma of the lungs
  •
Awesome article discusses the different balance of ER alpha and ER beta and the effects on tissue as it relates to proliferation versus differentiation.  This has clear implications in disease.  Physicians prescribing hormones without a knowledge and understanding of this are only causing potential harm to their clients.

The dialectic role of progesterone. [Maturitas. 2009] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
knowledge of progesterone and its metabolites are important in the use of hormones.  As the authors concluded here: "natural steroids should not be disparaged...an update on endocrinological knowledge and experience is rather mandatory for gynecologists".  There in lies the problem.  The IOM has shown that the average physician practices at a level of 17 years behind the current scientific knowledge and the environment created by medical governing bodies discourages questions, so as to protect the system.

Neonatal abstinence syndrome and associated health care... [JAMA. 2012] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
Very disturbing trend.  Study finds that opioid addicted infants are on a dramatic risk in the US.  This study looked at Neionatal abstinence syndrome from 2000 to 2009.  This follows the significant increase in maternal opioid prescription use.  We physicians must do better.  Patients must demand better.  This study just focused on hospital costs directly associated with the Neonatal period.  No cost estimates are evaluated for long-term care.

Absolute must read!  Science. That is what physicians are.  Eliminate politics and bias.  Aluminum, common adjuvant in vaccines and well known neurotoxin, has been linked to post vaccine macrophagic myofascitis.  Now, world experts have placed it at the forefront of a new created syndrome "ASIA" which is autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants.

Androgen Therapy in Women: A Reappraisal: An Endocrine Society Clinical Practice Guidel... - 0 views

  •
data on androgen therapy in women is sparse at best.  The conclusion here is suspect: "evidence supports the short-term efficacy and safety of high physiological doses of T" for women with with hypoactive sexual desire, yet the same authors recommend against long-term therapy.  How do those 2 go together???  They don't.  Support with physiologic Testosterone when appropriate testing reveals low T and symptoms support the same.  This is a practice guideline that lacks evidence to strongly back it up because so little evidence exists.  Practice guidelines are for lazy physicians.

[Hyperandrogenism or insulin resistance. What... [Lakartidningen. 1993] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
This study shows that induced hyperandrogenism in women causes insulin resistance.  This should be taken well note of by many physicians and patient.  Many women are prescribed massive amounts of testosterone through pills or injections, which is likely contributing to weight increase.

Sex Hormone Levels in Patients with Sudden Cardiac Arrest - Heart Rhythm - 0 views

  •
Study looked at hormone levels via serum analysis at the time of sudden cardiac arrest in both men and women.  Low Testosterone and elevated Estrogen levels in  men were associated with increased odds (OR) versus women only had increased odds with elevated Estrogen.   ManBoob nation, my first book, discusses the mechanism behind this for men.  The finding in women really calls into question the Estrogen only model currently employed by physicians for post menopausal women.

Association Between Endogenous Sex Hormones and Liver Fat in a Mult... - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
Time that physicians start following the science.  Study using data from the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis was used to assess hormones and fatty liver in men and women.  Increasing bioavailable Testosterone levels in women was found to be associated with increasing fatty liver in post-menopausal women.  The opposite was found to be true in men.  Higher Estradiol levels were found to be associated with increased fatty liver in both sexes.  However, the statistical significance was higher with men.  Higher SHBG was associated with lower fatty liver incidence in men.

Testosterone suppression in opioid users: A systematic review and m... - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
Opioid use, despite type (including methadone), is associated with lower Testosterone in men.  This is not new information, but this meta-analysis reconfirms this relationship, particularly that methadone has the same effect.  This relationship was not found in women.  These physicians that regularly prescribe opiates  to men are doing them an incredible disservice.  A lower T in men is a significant negative health biomarker.

Unintended effects of statins from observational studies in the general population: sys... - 0 views

  • A markedly increased risk of myopathy was observed
  • One cohort study (Women’s Health Initiative) of higher quality and larger sample size found stronger evidence of an increased risk of self-reported T2DM (OR=1.47; 95% CI 1.32 to 1.64) for the groups of women who reported statin use at baseline and three years later
  • Hippisley-Cox et al. found an increased risk of liver enzyme changes
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • weak evidence of an increased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was observed
  • Smeeth et al. found an increased risk of incident liver disease in the first year after the index date
  • The cumulative incidence of T2DM after three years of statin treatment was 6.25%, corresponding to an excess risk of 2.25%
  • We found no increased risk of peripheral neuropathy, depression, common eye diseases, renal disorders or arthritis associated with taking statins. Studies of higher quality did not show previously reported protective effects of statins on fractures, venous thrombo-embolism or pneumonia
  • There was evidence of an increase in myopathy, raised liver enzymes and diabetes.
  •
Statin use associated with increased myopathy, liver dysfunction, and type II Diabetes.  The authors conclude that the absolute risk is very low, yet OR was 1.47 for type II Diabetes (translated 47% increased odds of developing Diabetes as a result of statins) and OR of 2.63 in risk of myopathy (translated 163% increased odds of developing myopathy as a result of statins).  Seems the authors "low risk" statement is just applies to those without symptoms/side effects.  Physicians need to do a better job of understanding risks and customizing therapies.

Healthy Lifestyle Change and Subclinical Atherosclerosis in Young Adults - 0 views

  •
For so many, lifestyles are seen as unobtainable and of limited benefit.  This study proves otherwise.  This study found that lifestyle changes made in middd-life were associated with a decrease in cardiovascular disease.  Equally important, many were found to be able to implement said lifestyle changes--this flies in the face of what a lot of physicians believe.
