M1, or pro-inflammatory macrophages, are considered to be important for the destruction of tumor cells and foreign organisms, whereas M2, or anti-inflammatory macrophages, have been suggested to be primarily involved in angiogenesis, wound healing, chronic infections, tumorigenesis and tumor metastasis
