Funnily enough, I actually find that a good book can be more useful that online tutorials (more so for beginners). This is why I would recommend the book "Sam's Teach Yourself Java in 24 Hours". This is the first Java book I used and I think it is pretty useful for a beginner. I probably wouldn't buy it, since once youve read it and done all the examples it is basically dead weight, however, I would definitely borrow it from a library if you are interested. (Not sure if its at scotch.) This book will get you from a complete beginner to a proficient programmer in Java. However, this hasn't even started talking about game programming, which is an entirely extra layer of skills to add to your "toolkit". That's where the next book comes in...
