    Mustard is a common spice grown in Indian sub-continent and is used for garnishing various dishes. The plant bears seeds that are processed into dry seeds for garnishing or crushed to extract mustard oil which is used for cooking in Asian cuisines. Mustard sauce is yet another product, processed from mustard seeds which are used as an ingredient in making sandwiches, burgers, etc. In some cuisines, the green leaves are consumed as a side dish or mixed in a salad as an ingredient. Mustard is used in one or other forms for consumption in different cultures.


    It is indeed a lucrative business to grow mustards as an acre of mustard grown will produce bags of mustard seeds that can be sold in agricultural markets or can be further processed to make edible products. Mustards can be nourished in most soils, but well-drained soil could produce the good amount of seeds. Soil pH value of greater than 6 is recommended for well-developed plants and higher yield. Cool weather is favorable for essential growth of the mustard seeds and also it can also withstand frost to some extent as well although, constant moisture in the soil is preferred for hurdle-free growth of the plants. Add 10-15 pounds of 5-10-10 fertilizers for every 500 sq. ft. of the area and sow the seeds 1/8th of an inch under the soil. For best results prior to seeding add compost or equivalent fertilizer, 2-3 inches under the soil, keeping them at a distance of 15 inches apart. In addition to that if you are the growing on a small field, you can mulch the plants with wheat straw to keep the soil moist which is an ideal environment for the plants to flourish. The produce can be expected as sooner as within 60 days. The ideal time for seeding is during September or October so that the yield is ready for harvest during the winter.


    Though, mustard plants are resistant to diseases when compared to other agricultural produce, yet it is not completely invincible. Fertilizers and pesticides are commonly used to nurture the plants and isolate from pests and insects. Organic way of nourishing plants has not advanced to the required stage and often they are impractical and cumbersome. It leaves the producers with little choice but to surrender to the chemical world of fertilizers and pesticides.


    Although, all hope is not lost, and it may sound unusual, but is scientifically proven that spirituality can help the plants grow healthier with more resistance.
