The study of human DNA and genetic material belonging to other organisms to discover what genes and external environmental factors add to is called Genetic Research. If we find out what causes several specific traits or disease, we can hopefully better control traits, detect and treat and even prevent diseases from happening in the first place.

Genetic research has a crucial role in the ever-perplexing fields of medical diagnosis and treatment of the genetic disorders, non-transmissible diseases, and infectious diseases. Main expenses of genetic research are genetic testing, reproductive genomics, gene therapy and genetic data banks as well as pharmacogenics. Researchers along and also policy makers are continuously evaluating value of the research in terms of its efficacy and cost effectiveness of community health.

Genetic research permits the genetic diagnosis of susceptibilities of hereditary diseases. Along with the study of chromosomes at the core level of distinct genes, the science of genomic and genetic research and testing in a wider horizon comprises biochemical testing for detecting the likely presence of a gene-based disease or the mutant forms of genes allied with bigger risk of conceiving a genetic disorder. The result of a genetic test can confirm or rule out an unproven genetic condition or help understand a person's chances of developing and passing on some genetic disorder.

Nearly all the diseases that we know, of have a genetic constituent. The role of the genetic factor, though depends on the disease at hand, the influence may be large or extremely large or small but mostly, someplace in between. Researchers study almost every known disease to discover how genetic aspects may behave. The genes that we have are inherited from our previous generations. The major responsibility of genes is to tell our bodies how to grow and function. There are near about 25,000 genes that create the things our bodies need to grow and function. Each gene comprises of DNA which is a lengthy code that has just four letters in various combinations. We know that distinctions in this code can change the way a gene functions. Occasionally the difference is in just a single letter. The DNA code is changed by bits that are absent or are in extra. The missing pieces or the extra ones may be as minor as a single letter or as huge as a couple of thousands. Based on what is extra and what is missing, this may also lead to health problems.

Diseases such as Alzheimer disease, heart ailments, cancer, and autism are common. We know that the close members of a family may share many of their genes. We share about 50% of our genes with our parents, siblings and our children. It is possible that there are genes common to the members of that family that are involved in creating some of the major diseases. By linking to a family in genetic research, scientists can study which genetic variances are shared by the family members who have the disease but not found in the rest of the family. These genetic alterations fine down and locate the region where a gene might be present. This method of locating genes for diseases using the family is called linkage analysis.
